Company Ford & Bluefin

Featured Replies

I've been thinking about buying a Bluefin and remapping my Ford Mondeo company car. Their website says 33bhp increase on the 2.0TDCi engine, but I'm looking for fuel savings too. My only question would be if the dealers could see the remap when it goes in for servicing? I'd need to be 100% certain or I'd be in trouble with work.

Any thought??

I would leave well alone TBH, as all maps will leave a trace....

When I had a bluefin on my old Fiesta, it was untraceable, unless they have to actually log in to the ECU for something...and it will only disappear if they flash it.

Why don't you get one...then if it needs any work...flash the standard settings back on..then when you get it back, flash the bluefin back on to it...as the Bluefin module will save the standard settings...

and your company's insurance won't be valid and you'll be for the high jump if anything happens and the remap is found.

as has been said , any ECU (or PCM in Fords case) reprogramming will remove the map , and knowing Ford , there will probably be loads of software updates to be done in the future

You might want to check your paperwork too because many companies consider unauthorised modifications to company cars to be disciplinary matters.

Does the ford engine carry the same flash counter as the VAG engines do? the more you load and 'unload' the map the higher the flash counter goes, the Bluefin doesn't reset the counter on the TDIs as yet either unless they've added the feature recently.

If something expensive pops on the car (engine) they may well run certain 'checks' seeing as remaps are so commonplace today.

Personally I would avoid for the sake of your job, especially the way things are at present.

Thinking about it last time I was considering a company car I remember there was exactly such a clause in the car policy where I was woking at the time.

What year and what bhp is your Mondeo?

The 115bhp will make closer to 128bhp stock and the 130bhp will push closer to 148bhp stock even before a remap.;) The torque will always be close on exact ad stated.

Remapping the 115bhp wont give much more BHP maybe 15bhp max but over the whole rpm range with the power comming in really early and pulling up to the red line,

torque gains can be around 40lbft peak. The euro 3 130tdci will tune to 175bhp 300lbft with ease. newer euro 4s will need some better tuning skills to make 175bhp and 300lbft.

Ford & software updates on the TDCi is very rare, I have never known one to happen.

The Mondo is a 2008 and any remapping would need to be 100% invisable for me to take the risk. I liked the bluefin idea as it can be removed for servicing, but again does it leave a trace??

I can only speak from a VAG perspective and it does not leave a trace except in the latest ECU variant as found on the TSI Scirroco where it increments the flash counter.

Why not speak to Superchips themselves they are very approachable. I am sure if you ask the questions they will give you the correct answers.

even if it is 100% invisible, the cheif mechanic at the fiat garage only had to drive my car once when he said "so when did you have it remapped then?" didn't event plug into the computer, he was looking for which wheel bearing had gone....

on the plus point, he wasn't bothered and didn't tell fiat, so my warrenty remained intact, though its run out now!

alternative: a digital tuning box? you could take it off then when it goes to service....

No remap can go un noticed by the dealers a simple test drive will give the game away.

You need to bee looking at companies who offer a "total" on and off switch option where you have the tools to write the factory map back to the car prior to the service.

Alientech

You can buy the powergate s tool for less then £200, then you need to find a tuner who owns a master tool (£3500) to produce a map for your tool. There are lots of tuners who use the Powergate tool but brand them up as there own tools for some reason? Plus the powergate tool is the best tool around for ford ecus

Or even do what most people do. tell your dealer your car has been remapped, trying to pull the wool over there eyes can make things worse imo.

All the above is exactly what's in my "use of co car policy booklet" and the copy of the firms insurance I carry incase needed. Insurance doc says "unmoddified from manufacturers spec - unless otherwise agreed, where issued to a current employee, and/or vehicles hired to the employer (ie courtesy car during servicing)" or words very similar. Basically any additions and insurance is void.

And firms policies says it is a disciplinary matter to modify, and not limited to, engine, suspension, exhaust, wheels, tinting of windows unless approved in writing from senior management or OEM versions of previously fitted standard equipment. In the result of such modifications leading to an incurred loss for the company (ie car written off) not covered by insurance, and in addition to any policy excesses which are a result of neglagence or breach of this policy (also included are drink and drugs clauses etc), the employee will remain liable for replacing the vehicle to the same make, model and specification as that supplied to the employee.

The above is a paraphrase of 2 pages worth of things you cant do! The book price of my car is £18k, and there's no way I'd be able to pay the firm that. Could you pay the price of yours?

If you do with a firms car, and have a similar policy to mine (which is standard with many employers these days) you're mad IMO. WHEN they find out, you'll likely be in some serious brown stuff. You'll not only be risking your own cover, but more than likely the whole policy for your employer which will include things like the building, loss of earnings, public liablity insurance etc etc. In many cases firms have one policy that covers everything.
