Brake Fluid Question

Featured Replies

Having my disk and pads replaced all round this weekend so I want to get the fluid changed at the same time. How much do I need to buy for the VRS and how much should I expect to pay. Any recommendations on brand and grade?

Thanks in advance.

I would've thought the garage will just put DOT 4 in it unless you tell them otherwise.

The last fluid change I had at a main dealer was about £80 on top of a service I was also having done.

I helped another member do a DIY fluid change on his vRS the other week, we put Ferodo 5.1 fluid in it and we got through two and a three quarters 500ml bottles like this one:

FERODO DOT 5.1 CLUTCH + BRAKE FLUID 500ml # FBZ050 on eBay (end time 21-Oct-09 11:53:57 BST)

When I did mine I got through about 2 litres. I just bought a 5L bottle of Dot4 fluid from Halfords for about £15 (did my car and SWMBO's). The clutch uses the same reservoir as the brakes and needs to be bled at the same time (and it was a right pig to do).

From memory last time I paid to have the brake fluid replaced was about £40, but the brakes will need bleeding anyway as part of changing the pads etc so it should be only an extra bit of time.

Why? you are not touching the hydraulic system by changing the pads

IIRC i used about 1 1/2lts when i did mine.

I meant may not will, shouldn't try typing while talking on the phone.

I have the same problem, but we do have an excuse - being men ;)

Thanks for advice/opinions everyone - much appreciated!

I'd put DOT5.1 in (or Super DOT4 which is pretty much same thing). Compatible with DOT4 and much higher boiling temperatures.

I use DOT5.1 in 2 cars, and managed to boil DOT4 with kevlar pads on one occassion in each.
