Ruined weekend away - Oil Temp

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Got back from work (not in my furb), packed the car up ready to pick up a few mates for a weekend away and ....................

A beeping started as soon as i turned the engine on, and the oil temp light was flashing at me... I then filled the coolant so it was right up to 'max', left it an hour and tried again but with no luck.

Subsequently I haven't gone away now , but more worryingly what could the problem be?

Thanks!

Needs a scan at the very least to determine if theres a serious problem!

Looks like beer moneys are going to a skoda stealer then!

Have you checked the VAG-COM owners map?

According to the manaul, the "oil can" relates to the oil level, whereas the "temperature" symbol relates to the coolant.

There is no oil temp light.

It sounds like you may have a dodgy sensor, especially if the car is cold. Check the coolant level in the expansion tank, if it looks ok then try tapping the expansion tank by the electrical connector and see if that stops the warning.

Whats that mike??

Ye its the temperature mate.

Probably nothing more than dirty contacts on the coolant level sensor. A new expansion tank would sort it, less than £20 and not a dificult DIY fit.

BTW

It's not too late to go your mates...........Hit the road and enjoy.

I had this issue on my last car (SEAT Leon) which more than likely had the exact same parts and problems.

I was advised to take the cap off the expansion tank, use a flat head screwdriver, and scrape up and down the contacts in the expansion tank.

I tried this method and never had the beep or light come on again.

It will cost you nothing to try, so give it a go. might save your weekend.
