Rns510 mfd3?

Featured Replies

Can somebody please shed some light on the in car dvd/satnav for the Skoda, the RNS510. I want to know what the latest version is at the present time. I see you can purchase MFD1, MFD2 or MFD3 and then on top of that there is the 'Columbus' model. The reason I ask is I am considering purchasing one for my Octavia. Many thanks.

MFD 2 aka Nexus

MFD 3 aka Columbus aka Trinax

Frankly, if you want sat-nav that's really usable I find TomTom best. I've had an MFD2 and found its sat-nav facility a bit clunky and not that great. In fact most of the OE sat navs I've used (inc. BMW) have been inferior to Tom Tom IMHO.

I've no problems at all with my MFD3. I always said I'd never have a built in satnav because of the portability of TomTom, but the sheer pleasure of having no trailing wires to charge it is great.

It's so far never failed to find my destination, and using the SD destinations function (if you are using the 2664 software) makes it easy to punch in details of where you want to be.

You've also got the functionality of a large touch screen, graphics are good, an the voice isn't patronising.

Add into that the fact it's got 20gb of hard drive space to play mp3's, a DVD player, SD card slot, and you can't go wrong.

I've certainly felt no desire to go back to TomTom since fitting mine.

That's my 2p worth anyway, if it helps :)

Welcome to the site - you'll be able to find a mine of information on here if you search the right areas.

I used TomTom also but now got a Columbus. I find the maps are better and it takes me better routes than the TomTom did. Just as easy to use as a TomTom but with more features.

The MFD3 is streets ahead of the rather clunky MFD2 and I find it easier to use than a Tomtom. Like the previous poster I also like the no trailing wires, and the fact I dont have a clunky sucker mount on the screen, that you need to keep removing and cleaning the screen to deter thieves, and then end up carrying the thing around with you so it doesnt get stolen.

I see someone called my name! :orb_wave:

Yes you can get brilliant TomTom speed camera updates from GPSWorld for £20 pa, which gives you 26 (bi-weekly) updates.

:orb_toung

As simbo will concur, I too was a dyed in the wool TomTom devotee .......... until I fell in love with my little sweetheart in my MFD3! The TomTom is now up for sale and I'm more than happy with the Columbus.

If you want to avoid speed cameras then the TomTom is crap anyway and only cheapskates would trust their driving licence to one (sorry Indiana - no offence intended!!!).

If you drive a fair bit and want to avoid getting nabbed, go for an Origin B2 Origin b2 Review, Speed Camera Detector Review

Its by far the best on the market and works a treat. Also has nice green backlight which means it looks good in a Skoda!

Not cheap but then again, you get what you pay for. They are also generally available quite cheaply secondf hand on ebay.

...........don't speed ;)

Simples, innit

Oh here we go, another one who never speeds...........

Probably does 250 miles a year to Tesco's and back :P

Personally I tend to spend time with my eyes on the road rather than the speedo :D

If you're a good driver you can judge how fast you are travelling without the need to constantly look at your speedo.

Driving for 16 years and my total number of speeding tickets = 0

If you cannot spot a large yellow camera & markings on the road I question if you should actually be driving.

As for needing a Tom Tom device to tell you you're speeding - again I question if you're actually safe behind the wheel.

Ever thought of becoming a comedian ?

Oh sorry - you already are

As Stoofa said, I'm sorry you're not able to watch the road AND realise how fast you are going without a warning device

You'll do well not to get a speeding ticket with a FL Octavia, as all of the national speed limits are missing from the speedo's!

Really helpful. NOT!

As for speed cameras, what about the stealth cameras, you know the one's that the so called Safety Camera Partnership hide behind road signs, so that you can't see them regardless of colour.

What about those roads where you drive once or twice like on holiday, personally if I'm on a unfamiliar road, I'm concentrating on where I'm going, not looking at the damned speedo.

Perhaps we should do away with the conventional speedo & have a HUD speedo with doppler instead, that way at least you know that you're going to be getting exactly the right on the display.

Maybe all speed limit signs should be like this

Then I bet if nothing else most of the male population would notice them :D

I really can't see what the problem is, even paying attention on roads you don't know - surely then you should be paying even more attention to what's going on around you AND your speed. It's hardly rocket science.

So where's 90, 110 & 130? :D

Unfortunately the use of "nice speedsigns" has it´s disadvantages (nudity may occur)

What they didn't state is there's been a massive rise in crashes, pedestrians getting cremed & road rage.
