4x4 on mk1 vrs hatch?

Featured Replies

somebody may have asked this already but is it worth putting a 4x4 system on the vrs? i presume that if the floor panels are the same it would be quite simple,if expensive, cheers.

I don't believe the floor panels are the same; boot floor in the Mk1 4x4 is several inches higher. The MkII 4x4 is much closer to a normal MkII; I'm not sure if the fuel tank is slightly different.

Thing is why would you do it as it would cost a fortune and mean some major mods to the chassis/drivetrain system.

just buy a 4x4, fit vrs bodykit wheels, brakes, exhaust and interior then add a remap......A LOT cheaper than retrofitting 4x4 to a car that doesnt have it.

Agree, why put 4x4 into VRS, make a 4x4 a VRS 4x4 is a easier option and cheaper.

The engine is the same to start with, apart from some very subtle differences. And adding a remap will bring power upto and over a standard VRS. Then the rest is just cosmetic changes as sweedish states.

The floor pan is different in the 4x4 (according to his esteemed Lummoxness), I think the rear suspension is different too.

Just get a 4x4 and change the bumpers etc.

Yep the 4x4 has fully independent rear suspension.

You could probably pick up the interior and bumpers and spoiler for under £800, then you would need to lower it by about 30mm to get it about the same height as the vRS.

The fuel tanks totally different and goes over the drive train, like a latter n.

and it has RARB as well (but just a tiny one :D)

edit: It needs it too being so high up!!!

This would be a great car. A stage 2 4x4 :D

You'd need to find a straight 4x4 and a dinged vRS. It'd make a cracking car. Spend a bit more on it and you could have a 225bhp 4x4 Octavia.

A 130 TDi version would be cool too I think

I think there are several 4x4 octavias running waaaaaaay more than that on here.

Would need to drop it much more than 30mm to get to VRS height  when mine was dropped about 70mm it wasn't much lower than yours and i was on 16s

Sure is:D:cool::thumbup:

it wasn't much lower than yours and i was on 16s

As I keep reminding you hehe :)

Yes as you keep reminding me :P But you cant deny it's lower now on 17s :P

As others, it's probably easier and cheaper to tune a 4x4.

Awesome GTi have experience in converting FWD models to 4WD, and can do the conversion to OEM build standards (based on having seen a Golf they did).

DId you have to change to adjustable tiebars on the rear when you dropped that much?

So? My Elegance had the same rolling radius as my mate's vRS within a couple of mm, because the vRS was inch up but running lower aspect tyres.

Try telling that to chicken leg :rolleyes::P

Behave yourself :P:rofl:

Is there really that much point in having 4wd in an everyday (low clearance) road car? I really can't see the need. It's not even real 4wd anyway (ouch:P)! All I see is extra transmission losses, lower fuel economy, more weight, more complication and higher servicing costs. Not being a drag racer myself, I really can't see the argument for more traction "off the line"!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a self righteous 4x4 hater! I've got a rotten old '91 Suzuki Samurai for proper offroading!

Having said that, I wouldn't say no to a 300bhp 4wd Octavia! Just thought I'd spice the conversation up a bit ;)

Ok, it has full-time 4x4 with a fixed torque split, but the most "planted" and fastest road car I've ever been in when it was really extended was a Sierra XR4x4.

To do it properly yes

Um yes & at least 350 bhp :D:D
