Refuse collectors scratched my rear bumper :(

Featured Replies

How would you go about dealing with this?

Its happened twice with this car, once with my previous. Seemingly they try to force the rubbish bins between the parked cars and leave several scratches, about a foot and half long this time, on the rear bumper. Previously the scratches have polished out but I'm not so sure these will.

What to do? I can't prove it was them, only that the scratches appeared after their visit. The bins themselves show no signs of blue paint unfortunately.

My choices as I see it:

Complain to the council - no doubt my name will be marked!

Try and polish out and hope for the best. I'd take a photo first. Then maybe complain..

Wait around next week and catch them on video.

I'm sure they don't realise they are causing damage, its just very careless. Is it worth a complaint to the local council? Reckon I can convince them to pay for a repair?

Write in and complain, and see what comes of it.

If they say no then you'll have to drop it.

You got it wrong, they're called "bin *****".

Speak to the council, after all, these inbred monkeys are being paid for with extortionate council tax.

not bin men guilty of this but the council workers who cut grass etc. They drove the grass cutter into the side of my aunts and uncles car leaving a scratch all down one side and a slight dent.

They phoned up and the manager came out to have a look. They paid out straigt away though the insurance. Its a common thing that happens.

So not the same but it miht be worth a phone call.

Problem is, as you say, you can't prove it was them.

Many years ago when a postman, someone in a company accused me of reversing into their car. I didn't but it was enough to have me taken off driving duties (and lost money) for 2 weeks while it was investigated.

Their only 'evidence' was that it wasn't there when they parked but was when they went home. No red paint and was parked no where near where the loading bay was.

Thanks to all for your comments... I'm going to ring and complain and see what comes of it - one can but try. If they aren't interested and as I can't prove they did it, I shall get some t-cut on it and hope for the best.

Cheers

DOH! Sorry simbo99, though I think I prefer your new name!

I called the council and have been given a ref number for a manager to call me back. I don't feel too confident of a result but one can hope.. I so wish I'd notified them when it happened the first time - that was front and rear bumpers. I'm going to have another look at the bins to see if I can find any trace of race blue....

Bit of an update...

I was given the number for the refuse company by Waltham Forest Council so I gave them a buzz and spoke to the chap responsible for dealing with these matters. Right away he offered to inspect my car that same afternoon (without me present, which I wasn't keen on but didn't really have much choice as was going on holiday the following day) and would report back by telephone. The call never came :(

Having returned from my hols, I thought I'd chase him for an update. Turns out he did inspect the car that day and even took pictures. He then agreed that the damage was very likely casued by them and authorised a repair!!! I nearly fell off my chair! :)

So I just need to sort a couple of quotes and get it booked in. Result! :) My faith in humanity is restored...

Probably happens all the time!

My dad had his car hit by a bus in Bath, just found a card on the windscreen with the busses insurance companies details!

just tell them a member of the public informed you and that they witnessed it but you did not get there contact details

They have already agreed to pay, don't think he needs to lie.

It is very good news... I may even ask them to repair a few other bits while they've got it - which of course I'll pay for...but I'd like to think it will be cheaper than going in cold.
