vRS rear bumper - marked for reverse sensors?

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me if the rear bumper on a 2008 vRS hatchback would be marked on its rear surface for the positions of the four reversing sensors? Obviously the car has none fitted at the moment.

I know I can take the bumper off and look - but its quite a long job and I'm trying to plan the work before starting any dismantling.

Cheers.

I know the front bumper on my car (with parking sensors) came marked on the inside for the parking sensors so I'm sure the rear will be too. My bumper came with the holes already cut and marked though.

It only costs £125 to have rear sensors fitted by the dealer and this includes a respray of the rear bumper and electrics connected. I currently have an 2007 Octavia Elegance and these are standard. I have just purchased the Limited edition vRS and asked for these to be fitted. If you are intent on DIY fitment, maybe find an Elegance model and measure the sensors distances or I can give you them from my car.

My mate's was when he fitted them to his (2006 model).

£125!!1 Seriously it takes no more than 2hrs to measure, mark, drill fit and wire a four sensor unit available from ebay to an octy. I did mine when it had 200 miles on the clock!

Don't let anybody tell you the dealer fit sensors are any better either! £20 kit from ebay works just as well.

Measure twice, cut once and off you go.

Here is a pdf with all the measurements. Wiring is to reversing light on LH side.

Most ebay kits come with the correct size holesaw. Use masking tape to mark it all out and use a 3mm pilot drill if you want to make double sure the drill stays put with the big cutter.

I know if i were eventually fit them i would go for oem sensor fit. They look better than the cheaper ebay ones imo, so £125 sounds a good price.

Disagree; The OEM sensors if fitted >after< delivery - ie;not factory fit look identical to pretty much anything off ebay as they use the Cobra parkmaster.

You only get "recessed" sensors if you spec it at build or you have a new bumper. You also don't get any integration with the head unit - all you get is the standard bleeping so I'm struggling to get this one other than if you just didn't fancy doing the job yourself!

These were from Durham Parking Sensors. £18. You tell me whats wrong with the look of them?

Nothing wrong with the look of them, I just prefer the recessed look of the OEM ones in this thread.

You can get the rear ones from a link in this thread

Infact my mate has some just like that but I'm not that keen on them, also the beeper sounds cheap compared to the OEM ones.

Thanks to all who replied to my original query.

I can confirm that the standard vRS rear bumper IS marked for reversing sensors (embossed on rear surface) - the locations are as per the template posted above (as a PDF) by wardth.

Fitting took me a leisurely 2 hours and the finished result looks excellent.

I ended up fitting a basic 'CISBO' branded four-sensor kit purchased off eBay for £16. The sensors were finished in a silver that is a perfect match for the silver of my late 2008 vRS (can't remember which shade of silver it is). A 21mm holesaw is included in the kit and it cut through the bumper very cleanly.

I am extremely impressed with the performance of these reversing sensors - in fact they seem to be more accurate and reliable than the OE sensors on my wife's Fabia Mk2 and even work well in fairly heavy rain. I certainly recommend this brand, moreover they are cheap enough that I can buy a second set to keep as a source of spare parts! I mounted the buzzer under the rear trim near to the N/S rear seatbelt upper mount. It is more than loud enough.

I hate to appear a smartarse but.............. I told you so didn't I?!!!

Glad it worked out for you mate. All it takes is some confidence and accurate measuring

My neighbour stood there open mouthed and aghast when I got the DeWalt out on my car that had about 350 miles on the clock!!

I am tempted believe me but does the buzzer sound cheap or nice and deep like the Fabias?

Was your kit like this?

Rear Parking Reversing Sensors 4 sensor Buzzer & LED UK on eBay (end time 16-Oct-09 21:10:10 BST)

I bought the '4-sensor with buzzer' kit for £15.95 inc. delivery from here: eBay UK Shop - HIDONLINEUK: MMCX, MCX, SMB MALE

As regards the buzzer - well I wouldn't say our Fabia's buzzer was 'nice and deep' - it actually looks cheaper than the one supplied with the aftermarket kit. Its a thin grey buzzer about 2" diameter. Skoda electronics appear to be supplied by a Czech company called APRI - the park assist is shown here: APRI • Produkty • Parkovací asistent • Popis produktu I wouldn't say one sounds better than the other, they just sound different. What's for sure is that the CISBO kit I bought works at least as well as the Fabia OE system at a fraction of the price.

These ebay kits certainly look a lot more attractive price wise than £260 factory fit or the £125 dealer options

I might have to consider getting the drill out on my new car when it arrives :D

Seriously, use the template and be brave. As long as you measure accurately (and repeatedly!) before drilling everything will be fine.

.....but I take no responsibility form any damage caused etc......

Cheap and cheerful, these kits might be, but they won't interface with the MFD or the Maxidot will they? go on, prove me wrong :D

No and nor will anything else unless its originally specced on the car at purchase. :D

Why in God's name would you want to take your eyes off the mirrors when reversing to look at a graphic is beyond me. Sorry but its another nonsense gadget - parking sensors should be used in addition to eyes not as a replacement :D

Yes, I'm with you on that - a simple buzzer aid to tell you when you're about to hit something is all that's required. Of course, when I was 20 I could park my car without aids, but now I'm getting older...

Its a shame the sensors in these kits dont look like the recessed factory fitted sensors, but I suppose you can't have everything. Find me some that do and I'll have em.

Cos the mirrors don't give depth perspective. You could also argue that in most modern cars rear visibility is severly compromised by design.

I'm a firm believer in driver aids rather than driver solutions, but as i already have and RNS510, it would be nice to integrate somthing into that rather than have a bolt on. There are other bits of kit that can be retrospectivly fitted to intergrate with the RNS, parking sensors, i'm sure, are within the art of the possible.

I used to drive a BMW 5 Series Touring which had the full front and back sensors and display on the screen. This was set high enough on the dash to be nice and visible but I still hardly used it if at all and it was one hell of a lot better than the Skoda implementation so that just goes to show that some of these gadgets are not necessarily worth having and once you've played with them a few times, invariably you forget you've even got them!

Yeah if I was buying a car from new and I could spec it how I wanted it I would spec sensors but i just don't see the need to fit anything other than £20's worth of ebay stuff otherwise. Spend the money on a case of decent wine :D .

Or maybe a decent DAB aeriel so I can make use of radio 7 in anything but the middle of a town....

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of these electromagnetic strip type parking sensors:

Rear Parking Sensors

They don't require drilling the bumper - an electromagnetic strip is stuck to the inside of the bumper. I'm very tempted :)
