After Market HU Question

Featured Replies

Hopefully a simple question.

After searching on here, a few people have said they have run wires to the iPod from the HU into the glovebox, which is fine. They also say there is a 'V' shaped cut out. What I am wondering is wheather or not this is pre-cut or something they have done themselves. The reason I ask is cos on mine (which is an early model) it's not there.

If it does need to have one cut, where is a good place to do so to advoid drilling something bad?

Thanks,

Joe

Its not marked that I seen, easiest to remove glovebox and cut hole on the top.

sharp craft/ stanley knife will do the job as it's quite thin plastic

There is a little flap or at least there was on mine. I can't remember if I had to cut anything or if I just pushed it through... I'll try and get a picture in the morning. It's underneath some sound deadening IIRC on the left side of the top of the glovebox.

A picture would be fantasic and much appreciated! On the left you say? So the wire needs to be long enough to loop around the glovebox?

I really do hope it doesn't come to that, just hope it can be done it place.

Exactly the same for me. I found it my putting my hand in the glove box. It's not a hole but by the feel of it, a flap you can push to make way for the lead. Have you taken the glove box out? It's only a 5 min job and will help if you couldn't find it when looking through the opening

Mine is pre-cut. It's towards the back on the right hand side and is < shaped, at that angle as well. 2005 vrs.

Cheers guys, will have a look during lunch.

There you go. I think there's a perforated edge round the flap from what I remember and you just cut through it with a stanley knife.

Cheers for that :) not where I was expecting it to be. Is that sound damping/foam above easy to get the lead through, or is it quite dense?

Thanks, Joe

It's stuck across the back of the glovebox so it just folds up with the flap when you push that through. You may need to run the stan through it as well but it's pretty easy.

Thanks - shall have a go when in the morning.

That's not where mine was! And mine wasn't perforated, it was a definate < shaped cut out.

My cars an 06 plate if that helps.

Well, after looking - I can't see the bit Schern mentioned as being perferated, but I can see a < shaped bit on the side of the aircon outlet to the glovebox. Sounds (and looks) like what djswivel mentioned, and also looks easier to do, so I think I shall be giving that option a go, purely as I hope it's easier.

Right, finally got it fitted. In the end I used the < shaped thing, which I just bent to allow the wires through.

Below are a couple of images, just in case it is of use to others at any point in the future. To get the wires to the HU I had to remove the glovebox, which is pretty easy, then that was it.

Again, thanks for your help with this, those who posted.

Good pics!

Most helpful for when I get round to fitting mine (need a symphony head unit first)

Just a tip - the false floor of the glovebox clips into that when raised, so it maybe worth drilling a hole into or above it so it will still clip open. Should be easy to do as I had to lower the glovebox anyway, and its all accesable from there.

I took the glove box out and cut a hole in the corner of the "hidden" compartment. This lets me do my trick of leaving the glove box "empty" and open if having to park up anywhere dodgy. The cable's still there, of course, but you can't see it...

I should add, this was for a power supply for a sat nav - I sit a tomtom in the glove box and rely on its audible camera/speed warnings. The actual ipod cable was fed through into an elegance drawer under the stereo and that stays shut.
