Autocar Review of 2.0TDI Yeti Elegance

Featured Replies

While bemoaning the "high price" of theYeti, Autocar seem to overlook its equipment levels! They say it's £21,000 price is approaching the price of a Tiguan while ignoring the fact that the Tiguan would cost nearer £25,000 if it was similarily equippped!

The full review starts at Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI 140 - Autocar.co.uk.

Yes, but there are quite a few people who would rather have a lower spec Tiguan over a top of the range Yeti. They are just saying as it is.

That could well be true, but they didn't really mention that the standard equipment on the Yeti is much better than the Tiguan for the same prices.

As mentioned on earlier threads I was at one point considering a Tiguan; good car to drive and comfortable.

Went for the Yeti in the end as I personally liked the look of the Yeti over the Tiguan, the interior was more modern and better quality, and obviously the higher standard of equipment (SE & Elegance).

The Tiguan and Yeti S trim are very similar but with the Yeti engine choice is rather limited as is the options list.

Thank God for Autocar, it’s the only magazine that does thorough testing and the only magazine that I would trust. When I was selling cars I used the mag to find out what was happening in the future of the manufactures line up that I was selling!!! They were better informed than we were.

I would say if you don’t like a magazines review, you can’t quote them if they do a positive one on a car you like. You can’t have it both ways.

Actually I agree that Autocar are generally the best and this was another good review for the Yeti. They only criticised it on a couple of things (steering wheels adjustment) and price, which is not really a criticsm of the car per se and a bit misplaced anyway when you take the equipment levels into consideration.

To be fair Autocar reviews are always good and seem to test most areas in detail. They do say that the price of some of the bigger engine models is a bit steep but also say if you stick to the cheaper models they represent the best value and are a good buy; which is probably true for most of the Skoda range.

Still waiting for my copy to come through the post.

They have been a day late…………of late:confused:

I agree that they should have mentioned equipment levels in more detail, although there isn't a direct equivalent model in the Tiguan range for the Elegance spec Yeti (unless it's the R-Line, but thats £25,340)

Having done some checks, the 140 TDi SE Tiguan is LESS well equiped than the SE Yeti (e.g. no dual zone climate, or cruise control) and yet it costs £22,745 against the Yeti's £19,370.

Also Tiguan extras are more expensive, e.g. Xenons are £600 for the Yeti and £860 for the Tiguan, even carpet mats are £25 more expensive for the Tiguan ).

I do however agree that the Yeti isn't the bargain it could have been.

Newly-announced cars never are. Just wait 6 months for the "early adopters" to get theirs, and they'll be available through brokers and on-line at decent discounts.

Well not sure if drivethedeal web site has gone mad but their advertising up to 4K of the Yeti at the moment.

For example £18041.25 for a TDI 170 Elegance

Someone on the Autocar comments page is saying the Yeti is expensive "because the Kangoo is £12-£14k" :D

Auto Express pitched it against a Nissan Qashqai and the Yeti won. I'm not so sold on its looks though tbh...but then I do drive an Octy vRS...!

Not sure how that is relevant as Im sure many think the VRS probably isnt the best looking car in the world. I reckon the Yeti is pretty much spot on - from the ones Ive now seen, I'd say it was a pretty colour sensitive design. Some of the more 'adventurous' colours look reall good on it imo.

The 4k discounts mentioned above also sound great. :D

update - ive just been through the spec Im after; 1.8TSI Elegance with a heap of options and its coming up at under 20k with a £4529.25 SAVING!!! Not bad considering its not even out yet and it arguably already offers good vfm at retail pricing level.

I checked the DTD website and saw those discounts too. However they're not able to offer finance for them

Isnt that simply arranged with the dealer who is effectively selling you the car ?!

Interesting to see that even the Autocar road test has some misinformation on it. They have read the 'silver roof bars' option and then state roof bars being an option even on the Elegance. Someone read the options list and not the standard equipment one!

I emailed them to point that out - and that as others have noticed comparing the price to an equivalent Golf just doesn't work. For a CR170 Golf (ie a GTD) and spec'd up to what my CR170 will have (standard stuff and options) then you are looking at the Golf (or a CR170 Tiguan) being at least £4k more - and the Golf only has 3 doors.

It isn't a cheap car but it's as well made as the VWs using the same equipment so that must equate to good value (even if I am biased). Of course Audi offer the TT with the CR170 engine and you only get 3 doors with that as well.... :D

I emailed Whatcar? days ago to query their fickle views but they didn't bother to reply...

Honest John (Saturday Telegraph motoring supplement guru) will be producing a road test very shortly apparently. Keep an eye out at: Honest John Car Buying Advice - Home

Autocar is really the only mag I would trust. I like the Yeti but must admit to being a bit shocked at the price! They recommend the 1.2 must try that one!

As surmised in previous threads, Skoda no longer represents huge savings over other manufactures but they still represent very good value.

For example:

Golf SE TDI 140 £19,200

Yeti SE TDI 140 £19,420

Golf equipment over Yeti - light assist + rain sensor, lumber, vanity mirror lights, MDI

Yeti equipment over Golf - 4WD, duel zone climate, touch screen audio, Maxidot, small leather pack, multifunction wheel, front fogs, rear park sensors, 17" alloys, privacy glass, warning lights in doors, flexi rear seating

So from my point of view the mug is the one who goes to the VW dealer.

Interesting comparison but I would not have bought a Yeti if I wanted another Golf!

It is more revealing to compare it with the Tiguan and other 4x4s of similar size, In these comparisons, it is very good value imho.

And even the S model is pretty well equipped- and you can remap the engine if you need more power.

Used the Golf for a number of reasons, obviously very similar mechanically and dimensionally.

Also as in my case I wanted something like my previous Golf V but better, looked at the Tiguan; interior looked a bit out dated, low equipment spec and size wise a little bit bigger, then came Yeti; perfect.

So for me the Yeti is a credible alternative to a Golf and there my be others who are of the same mind.

Quite possibly, or by another finance house, but usually DTD give you the option of either straight HP or a PCP deal, but in this case, neither option is available.

I simply saying that I wasn't sure about its looks. The vRS is fine in my eyes but each to their own.

Hm. A caption on the printed roadtest says that roof bars are a cost option even on the Elegance; the Skoda brochure says they're included, even on the "E". ???
