Tyre Rumble - Any advice ??

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

I have a 57 plate 2.0 TDI on standard 17 in wheels, 225 45 17 done 36k . I have just swapped avon ZZ3 s from front to rear with about 4.5mm tread (done 13k on front ), and bought another pair of ZZ3s from camskill.co.uk for the front.

I now seem to have rumbling on some road surfaces rather than normal tyre noise. It does, so far, seem worse on "tarred and pebbled" roads whereas some proper roads (few & far between in Yorkshire) itsbarely there, which suggests it is tyre noise rather than suspension ? Seems to be o/s rear but hard to tell.

I can't honestly say whether it was there on the old tyres. The factory set, bridgestone RE 050s, did suffer sawtoothing on the rear, but were so soft the mileage was rubbish, and were generally noisy.

I have read some posts about owners getting 4 wheel aligns done with revised castor/ camber possibly curing a "rumble", is thaty just VRS's or all models ?

anyone any advice please ???

Thanks

The revised camber settings came out around the start of 2006 or so if I remember correctly, so your car should already have them.

My 2007 L&K had uneven tyre wear and noise from the rear, the rear camber values were MILES out of spec, revised or otherwise.

I think the geometry department was off the day my car was put together.

I had similar problems on my 2008 VRS - road noise was awful!

Laser check on wheel geometry - up to 1.2 degrees out on both front toe, and half degree out on both rear camber for which final adjusted readings were both as near as possible to mid tollerance at -1.18 (new spec -1.20 +/- 0.30)

Also had full set of Yoko Decibel AVS V550 fitted at the same time

Result???

Well, this is my third VRS - all have suffered similar road noise, all have been way out on wheel geometry checks, which alone is probably the major factor.

However, these new Yoko tyres are so quiet - the difference this time is unbelievable - it's like driving a different car! Even quieter after 1000 miles bedding in!

Obviously, each to their own tastes in tyre qualities - my prime objective was low noise - am more than happy with the Yokos!!

NB - Wouldn't consider geometry adjust without having new tyres, as the old ones are already damaged, if significant adjustment is necessary!

Hope this is useful info?

Thanks muchly !!

I spoke with a reputable local tyre specialist who use proper laser kit for geometry. they propose charging £25-00 check & printout, max charge £70 if all needs realigning front, rear, camber etc.

Front tyres certainly havent feathered off over 35k miles, take your point re damaged rears though - Skoda main dealer say they only adjust when fitting new tyres.

Cheers for sharing your experience - seems general tyre noise is part of the pleasure of ownership !!

My 2007 hatch hasnt suffered any uneven wear.

Do you load the car up, or ride over lots of speed humps?
