Little Fabia 1.2 HTP 60mpg?

Featured Replies

So was a month or so ago now, but I took a trip from Sheffield, up to the lakes, now being a ruffin youth, and owning the Ibiza looking all sporty with its black wheels, lowered and being 'nippy' to say the least, its been a long time since ive actually felt the need to drive the 'other' car at anything other than steady, and this was no exception! Which does make for funny faces when the usuals drive past thinking, idiot old man in his skoda to find said young 'un sat there! Anyway, I set off, with the extra weight of the SWMBO (lets hope she doesnt read that as you know women!) and her bags (twice the weight of me, and her no doubt!) but was in no rush, so sat on the motorway, and over woodhead, and so forth just cruising really.

I then took a lookie on the trip computer as I hit the final motorway, and was impressed some what... here is a video... I would like to point out that yes thats me at the end, so any comments will be taken to heart and I will kill you! Oh and much like T. Stig my music taste is interesting, as yes I can sit there, at the steady 55/60mph I was doing listerening to that, whilst ive been known to race down @ cadwell/pod etc listerning to Classic FM!

Anyway, onto the film!

Well after that, I thought bugger it I want 60mpg! So I was on the quest to hit 60mpg before I got to where I needed to be, I have to admit, it did mean slowing down again albiet only slightly as I stook behind a lorry making sure I was in its slipstream for the rest of the motorway, then country lanes, plus my awesome skill, well it was easy in the end! Even after the idiot old man civic driver pulling straight out on me as I did 40mph meaning I had to brake and I lost a good .3mpg due to that idiot alone!

The Final outcome...

And the rest of the tank looked like this...

So in all, rather impressive, and really happy with the 1.2 as it goes well using the torque band lower down, but driven nicely seems to get decent mpg too! The average for the tank being slightly lower yes, but thats due to short journeys earlier that week!

I was on target for a whopping 560 miles out of that tank! I didnt get it, as was in a rush on the way back and barely managed 35mpg!

*Note, I do not have CC added, this was all done with my right foot, or lack of it actually!

Well done for getting that, I managed to squeeze 59.7 from mine on a recent slow trip but it just wouldnt hit the magic 60! I shall try again when shes fully run in:thumbup:

How many miles is on the clock fella? This at the time had around 3000 miles maybe a tad more. I was impressed myself! I used to own a 1.2 Ibiza, and never got that sort of milage to a tank (didnt have a trip)

only a few hundred:OI think the trip is lying anyway, reckon its 2 or 3 miles over reading.

None the less (didnt do the fill up of litres vs miles) its still bloody impressive from a car thats book figure is 47mpg! Id be tempted by it as I car to own in the future!

They are good little engines and like any car if driven properly you can exceed the manufacturers figures.

A friend of mine used to have one but only ever managed about 46mpg but his acceleration is far too harsh to see any really good results.

The book figures for mine round town are 30.2mpg but i can easily achieve 38mpg with just town driving.

Seeing that you are a young chap can we not see at least a picture of your partner? I would be a little concerned that one so yoing is getting turned on by mpg issues? You may need to seek help? Or buy a diesel!

I had the old style fabia sport 1.2 - 48-52mpg was easily achievable on a long trip! Enjoy your little Fabia! :)

Im not that bloody young ;) Well not anymore.. im getting old!

As for buying a diesel... err fella look at my siggy, I keep the diesel for when I want to give it some and tash these petrol owners ;)

As for the gf, she gets better mpg in her C1 :( booo

Now this is spooky, you have recently bought a 1.2 Fabia and so have I, your GF has a C1 and my wife a 107:eek: Thats some coincidence eh:D

My Dad is fastitious about checking his mpg and their little 1.2 6v has avaraged 52mpg over the past 1000 miles it's now done 3000 miles. Great little engine and a really happy little car :-)

Funny you updated this... Dare I ask how old your dad is? I dont expect many people my age would be doing that!! I drove down to Farnborough in mine Thursday for a PR gig for Seat "Mania"

On the way back I was stuck on the m25 for a hour and a half which took the car from 58mpg (average but just set off really) down to 51mpg by the time I got on the M1.

However, with a steady right foot and the fact I honestly couldnt be bothered to go more than 60mph, by the time I finished the journey (total off around 200 miles) I hit a new PB of 60.5mpg!

Thought that was pretty good....

 @ my 24MPG!

I might be tempted to get a small engined run about lol

Thats not the reply I imagined when I saw you were the last to reply Babs!

Going off topic, but I drove the new 1.4 TSi Ibiza (new vRS!?) and err saw 18mpg on my 12 mile 'road test'

Most people would say its pretty sad to get 60mpg+ on long runs from the 1.2 as you do have to go really steady, but even taking it steady on short runs will see me getting 52mpg or so.

Im rather competitive (incase you hadnt noticed) so yes, not just in performance in the ibiza, id say youd have to be doing something wrong in this size car, with this engine to get less than 45mpg....

Im on target for 600 miles out of this tank according to the trip...

I take it thats the non maxidot dash as i cant see a temp guage?

From my understanding of what a maxidot dash is, no. It does have the trip computer display, but wont allow you to add speed warnings, and other funky things.

It does however have the annoying blue "your engine is still cold" on start up for all of 10 seconds (thats sooo worth while whilst you drive for the 1st 10 seconds thinking you have your main beam on!)

Why do you ask?

Well... lol!

I love my Golf, but if petrol starts going back up again I might have to get something more economical, and keep the Golf as toy.

I plan on popping to Seat to test the Cupra soon so will let you know my feelings on that. I'm assuming on 18mpg you were testing the performance more than the economy

I soon got bored of the over intrusive DSG box, its fun to blip down as you come to a roundabout etc, but on the other hand, coming out of a corner and you plant it, and it mucks around throwing it down again for it then to realise your at the top of that gear now, so puts it back into the gear you were in, not good.

Hmm... I've only ever driven it with a 2.0 TSI and the 2.0 CR TDI and it never did that? Maybe the box needs to be mapped to draw on the torque instead?

I didnt notice it whilst I test drove the new MK6 Golf GTi (211PS) engine in the Leon FR, which means the only thing I can put it down too is the dry plate clutch and the fact it has so many gears, it doesnt know which one to use with 7?

The 2.0CR's they had were all manual boxes, so could ride the torque.
