Gearbox Please Help!!!!!

Featured Replies

I have a problem with going from 2nd to 1st gear unless the car is just about at a standstill. It is the only problem with gears i have and the garage say they will have to strip down the gear box and re-build it at a cost of 600 quid!mad.gif

Does anyone know anthing else this could be as it only happens some times and only when doing about 5mph?confused.gif

How old is the octavia, I would be tempted to get a second hand one and get a garage to fit as this may work out cheaper.

But then £600 will get you a gearbox thats like new, I it was me and say i was going to change the car I would opt for a second hand one rather than a rebuild.

If i was going to keep the car for a few more years then I would consider the £600 rebuild option.

It could be something with the gear linkage - is the car making any strange noises while its in 1st or second - if its doing a whining sound that goes with the speed of the engine then this would be the thrust bearing thats playing up and would need a strip down to sort, Mine is whining at the moment in 2nd gear but for now i am ok with selecting gears so have just left it for now.

let us know how you get on with it

whineing noise from box 9 times out of 10 is the diff and if you leave this when it does fail completly it will rip the box to shreds.........

P.s to the op check the gear linkage that could be the prob try first

It dosent do the whining in every gear just 2nd gear all others are fine, I had the diff go in a vectra i had and know what you mean when you say it will rip the gearbox to shreds.

Sorry to the OP (not hijacking the thread) :)

Mine whines in first and you can feel the gearstick knocking if you suddenly come off the power, but it's fine apart from that. Haven't worked it out yet.

Have you tried changing the gearbox oil ???

If its got the wrong spec oil in the box then that can cause syncro issues.

:iagree: - I'd check the linkage adjustment first (cos it's only time), then change the oil, and if that doesn't sort it, it probably is exchange box time.
