Making your own PD160 Pipe

Featured Replies

Just before anyone moans, ive searched and also posted this in the PD160 thread, but no one has responded there.

I have just ordered myself the PD160 trumpet part, however there is no way I am going to spend £70 on a small piece of plastic pipe. :thumbdwn:

Has anyone actually managed to just use the trumpet piece, and make up a pipe themselves? The only problem I see is that where the pipe enters the airbox, it is square - is it not? Just thinking of giving this a go, and if I cannot get it to work then will have to stump up for the proper part.

Any suggestions?

I'd be interested to see how you get on with this. Long live Pikey modding

Would be a pig to do. I forked out the money for it, so it was a proper job. Expensive but then so is life "sigh"

Im willing to make it work! Ive messed about with classic minis for a long time, making up custom parts etc, so a little plastic pipe for my Furby should be alright. Surely some flexible plastic pipe with the ends modified should work.

Watch this space haha.

I'm sure someone on here made a 'Pikey' inlet with some flexable brake cooling tubing and lots of duck tape.

Saw this thread and had to comment...

The previous owner of my fabia was a pikey modding fiend...

The chrome tailpipe "fell off" he said so he "turned a couple of stainless steel pipes on a lathe to replace it..." You can just make my tailpipe on one of the last set of pics of my parcel shelf...

He also made a larger air intake ( a'la PD160 )from fibreglass, Got to say that while its not oem... He made a very tidy job of it. It seems pretty durable and had no probs so far...

Not sure what he did there but he claimed to work at silverstone so may well have had access to a quality machine shop. Nothing he did has fallen off so far hehe.

If anybody wants to see it, pm me with your email and I'll mail you a pic or two. I would just post but I can't get pics up here cos I access briskoda with my ps3:thumbup:

You could always go for a green storm induction kit, its basically the same as a pipercross viper just much cheaper, they retail for £80 I think and demon tweeks stock them

Good find alien.

But that look likes a shocking pikey mod, the induction pipe doesnt even go up to the airbox, and were the entry is (the bottom) thats just blowing cold air nowere. I would chuckle if a mate did that to there car, and opened the bonnet for the 1st time

Looks correct to me, the air inlet into the airbox is at the bottom, the filtered air outlet is at the top.

The flex hose at the end of the slam panel looks like its just floating in the middle of the engine bay on my screen.

You want something like this

You can then go from round to Square Etc, My brother got some nifty pipe from his work in black & has used for cold air feeds Etc..

As long as it is firm enough to stay in shape but flexible also, it should be a winner, after all it is not under any pressure ...

A little update for you all....

Ive managed to get this little pikey mod to work and it has been fitted for about 3 weeks now.

All I did was simply remove the PD130 trumpet (my word how small is the hole?!!), then with a pair of scissors, I cut 4 slits in the end of the standard intake pipe, basically opening the end up, so it fits over the end of the PD160 trumpet, black duck tape wrapped around to stick it in place - job done! It honestly does not look out of place at all either.

More importantly, the soot out the back of the car is pretty much non existant now, so it shows that the standard pipe connected to the larger trumpet really is all you need to gain improvements, and all for the small sum of £14! (£70 for a piece of plastic pipe - No thanks!!)

So basically, the pipe stays the same diameter?

Maybe it wouldn't be much of a cost to experiment with a larger (plumbing or whatever) pipe to completely reduce the smoke issues?

Since I also have the black smoke issues with my vRS I'm thinking of doing this inexpensive home-made mod.

I've got at least a couple of PD130 pipes here, if you want them for the ends? My idea would be to use the end connectors, and then use some of the flexible ribbed tubing mentioned above in between...
