VRS cutting out!!

Featured Replies

I have just dropped my mate off at home in the vrs and it cut out when i became stationary. I then tried to restart the car and it sounded like it wasnt firing on all cylinders and was really loud!!

Eventually i started it without it cutting back out and had to drive home doing 5k in 1st gear which sounded horrible and the car was stuttering under acceleration.

I have parked the car up and will have a look at it after work tomorrow.

Can anybody help me here?? this would be greatly appreciated and hopefully the remedy to this fault wont be expensive!!!

Thanks

Dan :)

coil pack?

Do you have a warning light on the dash? Either way, it's fault scan time, but it's probably worth checking the coilpacks unless you have access to VAG-COM or someone with it. If you can get the engine started again, disconnect each one in turn. If the coil is OK, the running should get worse, or even cut out. If disconnecting one of them makes no difference, then it's failed.

Could also be something as simple as contaminated fuel. That's what the RAC man concluded when similar happened in my old Xantia. A drain and refill fixed the problem in that case...

Looking at it, you'll get away with just Step 4 for each coil pack, actually...

Right...update time!!

I tried disconnecting each coilpack with the engine running and each time i disconnect one the car trys to stall.

So the car is now stuttering and its making the exhaust shake and it smells like its overfuelling??

Hope this makes sense

Thanks

Dan

Jesus this sounds like a slipped timing belt to me! I wouldn't try starting again untill its been looked at proffesionally mate!

OUCH that sounds bad!!

Does anybody know anybody who comes recomended in the north east who would come and look at it??

DJR

Its very easy to check if the timing belt has jumped a tooth.

Remove the upper timing belt cover which is held on by two spring clips, then remove the bell housing "rubber bung" which is at the top of the bell housing approx 60mm (ish) from the engine block.

Jack up the O/S/F wheel and select fourth gear, turn the wheel by hand (clockwise) until the camshaft timing mark lines up with the mark on the cam cover.

Now check the mark on the flywheel lines up with the pointer on the bell housing.... if it has jumped a tooth it will be obvious.

PS. if you think you may have turned the engine to far, go all the way round again turning the engine clockwise, dont turn the engine anticlockwise.
