Heated Mirrors dead

Featured Replies

You can tell it's getting colder, the questions are all about seat heaters and heated mirrors at the mo:)

Both my heated mirrors are dead, and the winter's nearly here and I would like to get them fixed.

The fuse is fine, so I am guessing it is either dead switch, broken connection, or burnt out heater elements.

From a search on here it seems that the elements are prone to burning out as they are on for 20mins (IIRC) at a time when the switch is left in heater position, and my car is a 51, so getting on a bit.

Basically my question is which is the least expensive try at fixing them first. Should I just get one mirror changed (they are about £25.00 for the part alone) and see if that fixes it, or take it to an auto electrician to see where the problem is?

What do you reckon?

I have the same issue as you, same age car an' all.

Maybe try removing the mirror glass, see if there is current at the end of the wires that connect to the glass (hope that makes sense). If there is power there, then I think it might be possible to clean up the glass, as it can get dirty over time (or so I read!).

If you can remove the glass, please say how, as it's taken me over a year of trying, and I still haven't managed it.

Just pull the glass hard :D

Is that it? Always gave the impression it would break.

I think you have to pull it from the down side until it pops, and then from the up side.

Gently press the bottom of the mirror until it stops. Then get a grip of the top edge of the mirror glass with the first three fingers on each hand, Thumbs pressed against the bottom of the glass and lever it out. It'll go with a pop, So keep a firm grip!

More than likely the heater element(s) have burnt out.

If you have access to VCDS you can adjust the time the heating operates.

Mirrors are set to constant heating when the switch is set to on, The rear screen is set for 20 mins.

I'll post up the procedure later on if anybody wants to know!

Thanks for that, shall have a look tomorrow afternoon.

On the older models I think the mirrors were timed as well, as it had a different switch. The middle did left + right, down did left and up did the heaters. Think this timed out as well, but never been able to tell as mine don't work. Feel free to set me straight though!

If you want to check the elements, they should have a resistance of 9-10 ohms.

I'll have a go at it when i get chance. Hopefully it will be the elements burnt out as that sounds the easiest fix.
