Avon ZZ3 problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

Don't worry, I'm not on to find out what to replace them with and start another tyre thread! But I do want to know if anyone else has had similar experiences to me:

Standard '54 plate Furby vRS with standard 16" alloys. Replaced all my Contis with ZZ3s, standard size. managed about 8000 on them and noticed a vibe coming through the steering - when I took the wheels off the front two had massive bulges on the inside sidewall, outer sidewall was fine. The NS was the worst but both fronts had problems.

It wasn't pothole damage, I didn't remember any big bangs and the wheels were undamaged. Bought all the tyres through Camskill who in this instance arranged for the tyres to go back to Avon, after I'd bought new replacements (!!) - Avon eventually refunded me fifty percent: I can therefore only assume they were faulty.

Replacements were fitted at the end of August but, quite unbelievably, I found the NSF was bulged exactly the same as previous this Sunday. Am now running the spare and put the good rear tyres on the front. Scarily over the last twenty four hours the vibration has returned worse than ever, looking at the fronts this morning in the car park I can already see a bulge on the OSF.

Again, I've not been bouncing through potholes - quite the reverse, I'm swerving all over the road trying to avoid such things these days! - or mistreating them, pressures are as recommended, mainly motorway or town driving: can't think what is going on. Am about to complain again to Camskill / Avon, anyone else ever experience similar problems with these tyres?

Looks like I may have to replace two or three tyres again now, being Scottish it breaks my heart, as well as bank balance, as they all have great tread left. But these bulges, some out by as much as a centimetre, must be incredibly dangerous.

I work at Halfords in Stirling and some of the alloys we get in for customers come with Avon ZZ3's - they have been so badly manufacturered that even before the wheel has been on a car we have found side wall bulges and sent the whole set back to be replaced with a different brand of tyres. We have so far sent back 11 sets with faults in the last 12 months. So much so that we specifically say NO AVON on the orders!

One set even came in with cracks between the treads!

My dad uses a a few places that are Avon dealers, not heard of this problem!

I had ZZ3's on my Fabia vRS, worked well, but only got about 8,000 miles out of the front set!

Polo6n1600i - that's sounds positively scary! Seems to confirm once again that I have a manufacturing fault to contend with...

Babs - Mileage hasn't been an issue but they are worn down on the inside, good old Fabias!

Yeah, seems like it was isolated to a batch then?

exactly the same happened to me, ZZ3's on the front of the vRS, got a hum, and vibration, garage insisted no problem, went to the tyre place and the took off the tyres, the front nearside has split where the tread meets the wall on the inside (of the tyre where I obviously couldnt see it!)... tech said the tyre was oval whis was causing the noise and vibration, and could have gone pop anytime! NEVER again....

Sounds like they are not fit for purpose. I'd kick off.

they are the correct speed and weight rating for the Fabia VRS ?

I'd need to go out and look at them but they are defo W rated, think its 83 or 86 rating but my memory ain't what it used to be :rotz:

Shark rider - glad it's not just me, agree - never again indeed.

I looked last night at those that were on the back and I had swapped to the front over the weekend when I found the newest faulty tyre - unbelievably the OS one has started bulging! It's only been four days as they were fine when I fitted them.....

We've had various set on our S2000 (lots on the rear) and never had a problem but I will have a check when I get home.

I have never had a problem with them, and find them great in the wet :)
