Featured Replies

Hi Folks

A guy over on MK5GTi.co.uk has organised a group buy for the WALK's

Cheapest place normally is Awesome GTi who charge £136 inc VAT

This guy has negotiated a deal for £115 inc VAT delivered to your door

WALK Group Buy

He's quite happy for other forums to get in on it. So feel free to add your name

For those of us who don't know, can you please explain what this is?

Thanks

Essentially it improves handling and traction by increasing Static Caster by 0.5 degrees

Carl:thumbup:

I might fancy that. Any Octavia owners who can share their views?

I had this mod on my last car, not cheap but it visually adjusted the camber of the vehicle. It made the tyres sit much flatter on the road.

It was lethal without the rear ARB but great with it.

This was on a Toyota **** heap though, I'm sure you guys wouldn't have a problem at all :)

By all accounts from everything i've read it really is one of the best things you can do to the car after as remap

Carl:thumbup:

Yeah, I'm up for that.

Only concern I've seen about them is that they increase stress on other bushes, hence some people upgrade / replace those when fitting the WALK. See towards the end of this thread.

Yeah seen that.

But to be honest unless your driving like a complete twonk all the time it probably won't do that much damage.

If your up for it Nick just get your name added to the thread :)

I fitted this on my Octavia II vRS TFSI a couple of months ago. Its easy to DIY-fit (I've put some instructions in the 'Technical Guides' thread). Basically it increases the castor angle (the angle by which the front suspension strut 'leans back' from the direction of travel) by about 0.5 degrees. Yes, there is a small improvement in traction and grip, but I wouldn't overstate it, this will not work miracles.

You have to remember that as standard the vRS has about 7.8 degrees of castor, plus/minus 0.5 degree. So the WALK is increasing castor by about 7% over the factory setting - not a vast amount! Bear in mind also that your car may be at the bottom of the tolerance range, so adding the WALK might only take it to the mean factory setting.

Overall it was worth having, but don't take too much notice of some of the rather overenthusiastic reviews that would have you believe it transforms your handling. I also have the Whiteline adjustable RARB on the car and in terms of bang-for-buck this is a better first mod option. Do the RARB first and then the WALK.

Sorry Folks out of my hands

G'day everyone,

Just wanted to comment on the tech side and function of the WALK.

It's a popular misconception that the Whiteline ALK or anti-lift kits are designed primarily for positive caster adjustment. Though they do generally add some more of this very useful angle, it's done so as a sweetener on top of the core function which is to modify and correct the amount of stock anti-geometry in the front end.

To understand the design and engineering behind the function you can take a look at the tech paper called “Effect of ALK (WALK) or, how does it work?” . This shows the theory and math that supports the principle but suffice to say it's done to improve handling by reducing understeer primarily under acceleration however the positive changes to positive caster is a bit more complex as well.

We often refer to static and dynamic settings and its particularly relevant here. Static is what happens on the shop floor or wheel aligner and is only an indicator to what might happen dynamically on the road which is much more important. We can add +0.5 deg static caster quite easily but what's more important is the way it's done and its effects on dynamic caster.

You see "caster loss" is the term used by engineers to describe the unfortunate reality of how much of this lovely resource one loses when applying eh brakes or decelerating just prior to turning the wheel to initiate the turn... just when you need it most. Unfortunately this is just when you lose it most and so we always strive to minimise caster loss with our design and changes. The upshot is that like most Whiteline caster adjusting products, the static number is the beginning and with this design you will improve dynamic positive caster by +1.0 degree or more depending on the age of the vehicle.

Hope that helps. For more details of what it looks like and how it fits, you can download the fitting instructions PDF from here.

Cheers

Whiteline Jim
