button to stay at BAR

F1

I was amazed by this - how can a "ruling body" decide who works for whom? Yet another example of the mad grip Bernie and his mates have on the "sport". Bah!! :grumpy:

So what happens if Button just decides to "take it easy" in the rest of his time at BAR? Who's the winner then, eh?

"Sport" or business?

"Sport" or business?

Exactly

 I think its just a conspiracy against anything british in F1 now. Firstly the british F1 event, now Button. Why dont they punish Schui for being boring - That'd be justice

Personally I think it for once shows a good side to F1. At least this seems to have been dealt with in a reasonably civil way by all parties and without recourse to an expensive and extended full lawsuit.

Nick - if Button decides he REALLY wants to go and will lack motivation / drive slowly etc im sure he will discuss that BAR in their upcoming meeting - at which point im sure he'll be allowed to leave with Williams paying some form of transfer fee. It is not in anyones interest for him to be actually forced to stay if he is adamant he wants to move and if he drives like a granny for a season it won't show him in a great light either. Basically he is an employee who tried to get out of a contract that was binding for free - he has now been caught and has to deal with it just like everyone else.

Anyway, I still reckon Button will do better staying at BAR than going to Williams. :D

It's nothing to do with lovely Mr Ecclesacake. It's a bunch of lawyers who study the contracts and see which one has the most legal grounds to have Button driving for them.

I have read and re read this quote several times. Is it a mistake? Are you sure you meant to say this? I am no fan of MS as a person but as a driver..almost always great and sometimes just awe inspiring.

Button.. well the jury is out. Has much still to prove. If you remember DC was great in a GREAT car, as was Hill. Neither could do what MS has done over the years winning the championship in (early) Ferraris and Benettons that were not class of the field.

Now think of this... those cars he won championships in were (compared to the rest of the field)) not as good as this years BAR is compared to the latest Ferrari. IMHO if Button and MS had swapped seats at the start of this year MS would have won the championship comfortably. He only needed passable reliability and the BAR had that. His genious would have done the rest.

The Ferraris have been so good now for so long that a newcomer to the sport could be forgiven for assuming that MS wins only because he has the best car. If you have watched him since his entry to F1 then you will know that nothing could be further from the truth.

Punish Shui for being boring? No the rest need a wake up call including Button. Jenson is looking for a car to give him the championship...MS does it eith his driving.

Button thought he had a get-out clause, tried to sneak off to Williams and got caught out.

He has another year on his BAR contract, after which he will almost certainly go to Williams.

It's high time over paid sports stars were held to their contracts. If only football had a similar process :)

Could not agree more

I think in areas that are so personality dependent, such as top sport, contracts over a season in duration are always going to be in jeopardy. As I said earlier - Jensen has to feel he's in the right place or he won't be motivated to drive well. If he knows Frank Williams wants him back, and feels the Williams is a better car, he will just be treading water until such time as he can go where he wants.

The stars may be overpaid, but the clubs (or companies in this case) don't stop paying them, or wheeling and dealing to get the stars they want on their payroll. Both sides have to feel comfortable with each other, or performance suffers.

Just my 2p worth. I don't claim to be an expert. I agree it seems that in strict legal terms JB has to stay where he is.

A sad day indeed.

As usual F1 will lose.....

We can only hope Ferrari step in and sign him for the future.

For those who think the contract with BAR being upheld is good I asusme you are the sort of people who would see out their notice with an employer and give 100%???

No point in keeping somewhere where they dont want to be. Mind you if people went where they wanted there would only be 5 teams in F1 and the rest would have no drivers.......

Well you could view it like this:

  • Good teams get the best drivers.
  • Jensen was inexperienced when he signed for BAR but he's come on in leaps and bounds and now feels he's due a better drive. Apparently Williams think the same (not sure if they're actually that much better, but there you go)
  • BAR signed up Jensen for an extended period because he was young and they could see potential so they figured they'd get him cheap (I don't know how cheap, comparitively) and keep him for that period so they could exploit his burgeoning talent.
  • Now that potential is beginning to be realised so Jensen wants out. But another young hopeful will come along...
