I have a Y plated octy estate. 110TDi (non PD). She is now on 156k and still behaving well. The only real issues I have had are:

- replaced all shocks due to one at the front and back leaking (consumable given my mileage, but that were changed around 80k, iirc)

- various issued with the turbo, I think this is due to the VNT design and possibly a vaccuum leak, can cause limp home mode - common

- wiper linkage seized (I should have fixed it before it failed) - common

- MAF failure can cause the car to fail to rev over 2.5-3k and have zero pull when going up a hill - common

I have a non-standard issue of some very strange tyre wear to which no one really seems to know the issue (and hence the cure).

Tailgates on the estate can rust under the glass, while mine did not have that issue it suffered bubbling of the paint (not due to chips), which I eventually got Skoda to fix under warranty :-)

She provides my daily commute (120 mile round trip), and seems to be quite happy to pull a trailer around too. Mine is an elegance, so I get most toys: sunroof, electric mirrors, windows (front+rear), climatronic. I don't have cruise control or heated seats. I run mine on variable servicing using longlife oil, so I generally get 30k miles between services so roughly one a year. I must average mid-50s for my mpgs (if not higher).

TDi = 90

TDi = 110

TDi = 130 (pd)

Not quite sure when the PDs came in to replace the 90 and 110s, but I think they gave:

105

115

130

what are the common faults to look for?

Front (anti roll bar) drop links wear pretty quickly - cheap and easy to change

Temp sensor - cheap and easy to change

which model should i go for?

Elegance or L&K (Laurin & Klement)

whats the differences between classic, ambiente, elegence:confused:

Classic & Ambient have the 90 BHP engine and less creature comforts

Elegance is packed full of spec (cruise control, Parking sensors, Sat nav and Leather are not std)

L&K Fully loaded (cruise control, leather, sat nav and black chrome wheels)

where should i look for 1?

Autotrader, eBay, Pistonheads, here etc.

and finally are the engines PD and what bhp are the tdis upto 05

67 BHP SDi (non turbo - steer well clear!)

90 BHP TDi Classic & Ambient

110 BHP Elegance & L&K's (most economical of the lot)

130 BHP Later Elegance & L&K's (thirstier than the 110) The 130 is the ONLY one that is a PD

For full spec look on the parkers website

Check the rear legroom is sufficient for your needs, the HUGE boot comes at the expense of limited rear legroom.

My pd130 Elegance(04) plate is now upto 130k. The only problems i've had are slipping clutch @ 85k (was remapped though and I love the torque rush), temp sensor @ 90k, worn/leaking shock absorbers @ 100k (replaced with aftermarket items).

Other than that I've not had any other failures and I've got an average 50mpg over the last year.

The estates are much better looking than the hatchbacks (imo). My elegance estate came with lights above the rear doors (great when strapping kids in) which I didn't have in the hatch and the 12v power in the boot is also a good thing, great for the cool box in those hot days out.

Elegance comes with Headlight washers/sunroof/climate control/alloy wheels over the ambiente and classic, the pd130 also comes with a 6speed gearbox over all the other models 5speed.

I had Awesome add Cruise Control onto my octavia and its one of the best mods i've had added (£115 ebay special offer)

Ive got a 130 pd elegance hatch with 110k now on a late 54 plate whice were last ones released , it still gives me 56mpg on a 50 mile A road and motorway trip each day . The 6 speed box is great and i think a lot more robust than previous 5 speed , had a aircon rad fan replace d this year , as it had worn bearings .
