Handling gone to pot

Featured Replies

Car is 55 vRS with 30k.

Weitech coilovers, Jabba anti roll bar, standard vRS alloys.

Went to the lakes last weekend to give the car a run out as it had been sat for 2 months while i built my sub box amp rack etc. I checked the tyre pressures and filled all to 32 psi and local garage as i dont have a pressure gauge.

Once at the lakes had a bit of spirited driving and found the handling to have deteriated. Front end seemed light almost as if i was on ice. Car didnt feel as stable / planted when exiting corners under acceleration. Spoilt a good day out.

So what could be wrong? Could it be incorrect tyre pressures? The excess weight in the boot due to subs so suspension would need raising to compensate? Or something else.

wudnt av thort it was tyre pressures if front felt light..

Extra weight in the back will lighten the front end in theory, but not by much considering the weight of the engine. Raising the suspension won't make any difference, as the springs will still be compressed by the same amount. I reckon it's either the tracking, your console bushes or simply over-egging it on damp roads (worse for traction than either dry or wet TBH...) Tyre pressures ore OK, but you would probably be better with a couple more PSI in the fronts...

First of all get yourself a decent tyre pressure gauge - don't rely on garage gauges!

Second, check your suspension bushes - front console bushes and wishbone bush, and at the back the two rear beam bushes. Use a pry bar to encourage movement.

Third, do a scan on your power steering and maybe try turning the assistance down a little - this will make the steering a bit heavier and give it a little more feel (try assistance level 4).
