Who's been lucky enough to have both

Featured Replies

Not been on here for a while, but glad I popped back for a look as I see a special on the Weitec Hicon GT Coilovers which has got me very interested. :D

Who has been fortunate to have experience of Koni FSD with H&R Springs and also Weitec Hicon GT Coilovers as I would like to hear about your comparisons to help me with what I am looking to achieve with my car.

What I want is uprated suspension, but not to lower the car to much, well to start with anyway :D and not to make the ride to stiff.

To give you a bit of history my MK1 VRS has already had the following done, so I would like the next step to possibly get the suspension sorted:

Uprated SuperPro bushes all round

Dogbone Mount

Whiteline Rear ARB

Mmmm at this price would I be stupid not too  - when is this offer on to. Be quick peeps help me decide

Hi There I have had both on my car and still have the Weitec GT's on it

This has been covered a number of times and you can look up various threads on the subject, but basically with the mods you have either set up would be a good choice.

It all depends on what your preference is.

Koni FSDS with H&R springs will lower you car approx 15mm no more.

The handling will be greatly improved and this set up works for a very comfortable ride if not even better than standard from a comfort feel. You will find a much better turn in and planted feel on cornering. The faster you go the tighter the FSD's and H&R will react. Most members who had not changed to coilovers will probably have this kind of set up. This works better on the MK 1 VRS than the MK2

With Weitec Coilovers you are basically going one step further where you then have the ability to customise your ride height from around standard height to approx 50mm lower although you woud not want to go that low.

The overall feel of Weitecs is a much firmer ride and you will feel the road surface more, as you will with all coilovers as they are all generally a firmer ride..

Although just because they are firmer does not mean they are uncomfortable. Most people who have the Weitecs will tell you that the firmer ride is a good thing and that the feel of the car is more sure footed. i.e the turn in is much greater improved than FSD's. The adjustable platforms makes if easier to set them up how you want them so if you are going near standard ride height the comfort will not be far off the FSD's. The lower you go with them the less comfort you will get.

I have not heard a bad coment on either set up

The price may be the deciding factor as FSD's are neally the same price as Weitec's and you then will pay nearly £200 for the H&R's

Thanks for the reply mate.

I really appreaciate you taking the time out to supply a detailed report.

Can I just ask how has it affected the wet weather handling?

The only downside with the MK1 VRS's I have owned is during wet weather conditions. It appears that the great feedback they can give in the dry makes them feel a bit nervous and twitchy in the wet. Does either the Koni's or the Weitec Hicon GT help with wet weather feel \ grip?

Thanks again

Thanks for your comments.

I think you may find that both these set ups will actually make driving in the wet better, as being a firmer set up than standard will be forcing the tyre harder to the ground so should improve traction. I found that on standard suspension in the wet the car would brake away and i would get torque steer all over the place. I don't get that as much now. But there again I am pushing neally 230BHP with a torque of neally 265NM so pulling away quickly can be enteraining in the wet to say the least.

Mark.
