Yeah did'nt you have a router issue lately ????

I did with the linksys router as he wireless died so went onto an old tp link router i had and the wirless works.

It got me thinking though it was ok with the other router I had up untill it packed up, I am now tempted to plug the linksys router back in and although it will only connect via cable connections (ethernet) its worth trying it just to see if things improve

Sounds like a very good place to start with your fault finding, as it is the only thing that all you pooters have in common that you easily check

I would still recommend unplugging everything and giving it a while to discharge. It worked for me.

Well I phonned them today and they confirmed that i was being traffic managed and advised me to download a free "internet usage monitor" application and to install it on all machines.

Guess what my sons computer is to blame - he came in from college at 4 and by half 9 his computer had used 1.03 GB   Whilst my desktop all day used just 78 MB

They told me that last month i was using more than 40 gig of internet.

They then started giving details of upgrade prices but i was told i could have the unlimited package for £25 per month but this is still traffic managed between 5pm and 9pm where within that time if you go over 5Mb you get traffic managed for the next 24 hours but only if you go over 5mb between 5pm and 9pm  5mb isnt much is it then they traffic manage you even though they say its classed as an unlimited service.

I have got to do something my son has been downloading movies, games, playing online games, music downloads, you tube - we found out that he has been popping home in his lunch breaks and starting a big download and going back but leaving the pc downloading in his room

I suppose its the problem with letting your kids have the internet.

I cant get over the fact of (1GB) in 1 day for just 1 machine thats before the other PCs are counted

I've done a night of 75 gig ish before now whilst dling some "stuff"

Glad you have got this sorted even if it is a bit of a crap outcome.

Ouch!:eek::eek:

If you get SKY and have SKY TV, you can get 40gb of up to 10mb/s for £10 a month. As far a I know it isn’t throttled. I have never been throttled at any time……….at least not so far. Moving to SKY was a good deal for me as the bloke in the shopping centre who sold me SKY, gave me a years free phoneline too, as well as a free box and fitting.

i think im with idnet, never any problems. oh and if you doing a speed test do it whilst connected by a wired lan and not wireless as wireless will create a slower speed between you and the router etc etc (someone explain it better please).

I think that depends what kind of wireless network you have. For example, I have 100Mbit/s wired and 130Mbit/s wireless so it's actually marginally better for me to be on wireless when I measure it. In the scheme of things though, the majority of users will have the bottleneck in the ADSL and the difference between getting the data back to the PC will be negligible on most modern wired/wireless LANs imho :)

One thing that does affect it is what other things are using the connection at the time so if the OP's son is kicking off downloads while you're measuring it, there'll be a drop in the Speedtest score.

Someone I know was capped by Virgin down to 1mb for downloading whole series of programs almost nightly. He was on 50meg.

Virgin told him he had to be torrent free for 30days to get his speed reinstated. Last I heard he'd found a few unsecured routers in his locality.

stop whinging about slow connections you lot, this isn't capped!!! this is as it is

to be fair i live about a million miles from anywhere and my advertised speed is a whopping 512k :)

Look what i have just tested...I'm on an 8 Mb/sec max with Virgin Media...:rofl::rofl::rofl:

HA...just done it again, not bad for non cable....:D

Think there may be something wrong here....

FYI-folks -Virgin seem to have problems in certain areas -my connection has variable speeds -been escalated twice -but Ive followed it up with emails on the feedback bit on Virgin media and had calls from someone in the UK who tells me that they've had similar problems --Broadband help tell you that they see no problems with your speed ( well from Asia they might have problems)-but lo and behold from the UK they see them . So get onto the Virgin site and flood them with complaints -check your connection speed in the morning ,mid day and early evening -if it drops ( as mine did to 1MB) ,then back to 8, complain . And ,when your complaining -voice your displeasureif you have to wait more than a reasonable time to connect ( I consider 5 mins reasonable),and if the standard of English is poor -complain again .It gets results -seems Virgin are prepared to listen ,BUT ONLY IF YOU SHOUT .(OH -and mention that when they gave you the "free" upgrade to 10MB- your charges increased)
