Clutch slipping after only 36k!

Featured Replies

Does this sound right for a dying clutch?

1st to 4th it is fine but in 5th and 6th as the turbo kicks in but only on full throttle the clutch slips from about 1800rpm up to about 2.5k rpm then the clutch grabs and away you go.

I realise i shouldnt be doing full throttle stuff at that rev range but does it sound like the clutch is slipping to you?

The car has had a 'Pbox' Tuning box fitted by the previous owner but it supposedly only ups the power to 160hp ish. I bought the car at 18.5k and have had the chip switched off pretty much all the time as i dont really see the need for it.

If it is time for a new clutch do I have to change the DMF or is it simple a case of doing it while the car is in bits?

Sounds like the clutch is on it's way out. Fairly common with a tuned motor. OEM kit has dropped in price, Clutch/DMF/Release bearing can be had for £400 + fitting. Cheaper if you fit an SMF, but a lot more chatter at idle. Also the option for uprated clutch (expensive.)

drive the car without using the full throttle at low revs in 5th and 6th , and the clutch may last for a long time, you are only getting clutch slip whilst doing that , so why do it

@ric - because the clutch could go at any point. I certainly wouldn't want to lose power in the outside lane of the motorway.

i don't understand what you are trying to say , the OP states it only slips when using full throttle in 5th and 6th gear , i made the suggestion that the OP doesn't drive like that and the clutch will last a lot longer, which is true, if the OP continues to drive in a manner that causes clutch slip , then yes the clutch will be worn out, or break up if excessively overheated, obviously if this occurs, the OP will probably have to fork out for a DMF also, as the mating surface on that will be fooked

also if the OP is using full throttle in 5th and 6th, they need to slow down as i would guess they are probably breaking the speed limit

Thanks for that.

Well tbh When i'm having a blast the revs stay higher than the range that causes the slip but i'm trying to be a good boy atm hence removing the tuning box.

I only really noticed the slip as i was being lazy and didn't bother changing down for a corner and used the torque to help me along. IT was only then that I investigated the severity of the issue. This could mean it has been doing it for a while but I didnt know. Who knows?

Anyway back in the car today for my weekly commute form norfolk to london and I couldnt make it do it! so i'm in the process of ordering the bits to be done next time my mechanic has it for a service and in the mean time i have RAC cover!!

My Octy is more quiet with a SMF and new clutch now than when it had a DMF in it.No noises or chattering at all

Had a problem with my clutch last week in every gear if you went hard on the accelerator it would jump to 30000 revs squeeling like hell(as if i was wheel spining but wasnt) so thought the clutch was gone. Took it to a garage where i was told i would need a whole new clutch after reminding them that i had only had the car three months 9which i bought from them) they said they would strip it down and investigate to see if there was another issue that may be causing this. One hour later i receive a call saying that it was good news and that the input shaft seal was ripped and this was dripping oil in to the clutch causing it too slip????? and that it would be repaired under warranty but i would still have to pay for the replacement of the clutch pressure plate and release bearing. All in all it went from being very costly to £70 which in my eyes was a bonus.

If you have no plans to uprate the car then stick with an OE clutch otherwise you'll be wasting cash.

it would jump to 30000 revs squeeling like hell

has it been remapped to have the limiter raised

My previous Ibiza PD130 had what felt like masses of clutch slip that randomly stopped never to appear again

Turned out i'd just over topped up the oil, my mechanic cousin drained an adequate amount out of the system (and told me to leave well alone!) and all was fine again.

I also did exactly the Fabia earlier in the year! I do now leave well alone!
