1.4 8v mpi question.....

Featured Replies

The engine seems like its got a misfire. Now as ive got a trade card for Halfords I went there to get some spark plugs and try see if that helps.

Now when I got there the book listed 2 types of plugs for the ATZ engine code which mine is. When I looked at the Bosch ones they listed for the engine then they were different to the one I took out the car. It had 3 "prongs" on the tip and the Bosch only had one.

The ones in the car are NGK but they didnt stock them in Halfords, hence why I looked at the Bosch ones.

So basically, does anybody know what kind of plugs I get?

Does the misfire occur when the engine is under load, or is it at idle?

The 1.4 mpi engine has a slightly 'lumpy' idle, this is normal for this model.

For the ATZ engine there are two types of original plugs Skoda use, both are interchangable.Brisk have three earth electrodes,BRISK DR15TC is the plug type and Champion have a single earth electrode CHAMPION RC89PYC is the type of plug used.According to Skoda these should last for 60,000 kms.

moley - it does have a slightly lumpy idle but it also occurs just about 3.5k rpm

110ivan - thanks. I wasn't sure if the single earth electrode would be sufficient.

:)

Could be a faulty ignition coil or temperature sensor .... Most common faults on the 8 valve engine.

Still, it'd be a better idea to work at the cheaper scale of things, instead of throwing 30 quid at a coil (unsure of a temp sensor price, my fiesta cost me 28 quid ;|), might as well try plugs, leads, pack, then temp sensor

Just out of interest would the cable for VAG-COM be the same as a mk4 Golf?

Cos my mate has it and that would help me find out the problem wouldn't it?
