'99 Octavia 1.9 TDI Cutting Out While Driving

Featured Replies

Hi All, first post so hope someone can help. Couple of months back drivers door lock failed, key would turn in lock and key got stuck but wouldn't unlock car. Got key out and am living with that problem. Main thing is since that incident car keeps cutting out while driving fairly regularly and without warning - making it dangerous to drive. Could the two things be connected or is it just coincidence? Key is new as one had failed previously and same problem with both keys we have. My wife who normally drives it says she opens/closes all doors and locks/unlocks doors a couple of times and the car will restart. Think this is a 'couldn't think of anything better to do' fix but anyway, are the door locks and immobiliser connected and what can I do to solve this?

The obvious candidate is relay 109 (on the relay panel under the dash).

The transponder in the key is not read when locking/unlocking doors so this is a different fault.

The relay is part number 1J0906381A and you should be able to order it through any Skoda, Seat, VW or Audi dealer. There are also lock repair kits available part numbers 1U0898001 and 1U0898002. So all together with a bit of searching on this site and some of your time you should be able to fix both of your cars problems for less than £25.

Thanks Guys, that is a great help. Will be getting a new relay! Hope that does the trick. Will let you know.

Just looking at my Haynes manual, to get to the relay it looks like you have to take half the inside of the car apart! Anyone know any short cuts, or tips for getting to the relay?

just take the piece of trim off the underside of the dash above the pedals and look up, there is enough space to reach up and remove the relay. That's how I did mine.

Good one, never did trust Haynes much!
