Second Car Advice

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy myself a second car which will be garaged 95% of the time, off the road and taken on a trailer to track days (cheaper than actually insuring it!). My dilema is what to buy?

I did quite a lot of karting when I was younger in the Rotax series.. however I have never driven a car competitively. I want to start doing clubman type stuff so want something to hone my skills in before I enter any competitions. I've narrowed it down to these;

Peugeot 306 GTI-6

Citroen Saxo VTS

I'm not looking to spend more than £1500, any suggestions?

To be honest, french, cheap, and reliability dont tend to go hand in hand, especially when your talking about the Chav's charriot of choice (the VTS).

What about an old E30/E36 3 series Beemer? £1500 will get you a lot of car, usable reliability, and RWD for some proper fun.

MK2 Ibiza cupra? 106 GTI, Golf VR6?

Dont forget the new law about to come in that states all cars, even those declared sorn and not driven on the road, kept in garage etc. must be insured.

Most track days require cars to have a current MOT so the car will also need insurance to get to/from the test station. You will also need to insure it for the trackday itself.

I think the 106GTI and Saxo VTS are great cars to get started with, just try and find the best looked after example you can find. Avoid anything with modifications and missing service history. There are some good examples out there!

Don't laugh, but the 2CV series is very competetive, and about as cheap as motorsport gets!!

That law applies to cars which are not SORN, and have valid tax.

On another note, Im probably not going to use the car for at least a year, as will be spending quite a bit of money on the car, buying the trailer etc. The kind of stuff I've looked in to does not require any valid documents.

I've had a look at the 106 GTI and it is tempting me rather a lot. Want something of around that size, a 3 series would be a bit big.

slight hi-jack I'm looking at buting a Passat, keeping it for a bit before I sell it and trying a BMW.

Found an L plate 525i touring and my mechanic has a 525i saloon on a P he's looking at selling when he gets an X5 fixed up.

Managed to get reasonable quotes (it means moving my ncb from the Fav to the Beemer though)

The big question is.......should I?
