Does ECU have an anti-tampering "seal" ?

Featured Replies

I'm a bit confused here.

I seem to recall people saying the ECU has a kind of anti-tampering seal on it so if ever you need to have it opened, it's physically evident from the outside.

But I've also heard there's no "seal" as such - just torx screws which can be removed to open it up. Once put back together again, there's no visible aspect which has changed from the outside indicating the cover has been previously removed.

Could experts / those who've been chipped state their experience?

No visible seal on mine.

Jabba sport told me it is a rubber seal that can be heated up to make it sticky so when you open the unit up if can be pushed together again and as the rubber seal is sticky it will reseal itself.

Ooh. Cheers Ivan too :)

:rubchin: I suppose that would potentially explain why some people say there is evidence of tampering and other say no if you "do it properly" ;)

thought the remap was done via the odb port?

From hearing other people's experiences, it depends on model / batch / version of ecu and also the tuner in question.

Jabba told me the early 04 cars like mine may need to have the chip phsyically removed as the 04 cars use a different code that Jabba couldn't update.

Mines an early 2004 MY and has never had the ECU opened up, all my remapping has been done via One Click.

Ross What the feck does MY stand for ?

I'm not Ross but to save you having to wait I'll answer anyway!!! :D

I believe MY stands for Model Year.

Model Years don't tend to run from Jan - Dec but seem to run from Sept - Aug. So a slightly improved specification or change to a particular model will be introduced for a particular model year. When I got my previous car it was registered in Sept 01 but was an 02 specification car.

Hope this makes some sort of sense!!! :)

Having had a few ECUs opened in my time I can tell you there is a sticky tar like seal around the perimiter of the ECU which re-seals itself when you close it back up again and my educated guess would be that it's to keep water out of the box.

Spot on, this is why new Skoda's are mostly now 2005 Model Years.

Also why parts depts will quite often ask for your chassis number and not the reg as the reg is somewhat irrelevant.

The list below gives model year (MY) and date production started for the (old) Octavia:

MY 1998 - 01.08.97

MY 1999 - 01.08.98

MY 2000 - 01.05.99

MY 2001 - 01.08.00

MY 2002 - 01.05.01

MY 2003 - 01.04.02

MY 2004 - 01.08.03

MY 2005 -

Perhaps one of our 'insiders' can provide the date for MY 2005 from the V Page details contained in the current ETKA.
