Both fans constantly on!

Featured Replies

Both the fans on my radiator seem to be constantly on from the moment i start my engine. Is it something simply like the temp thermo or temp switch or something more exensive?

Anyone had this problem?

if you have climatronic, which the vRS does, then its perfectly fine as the fans do run all the time. If you switch the climatronic to econ mode from auto, then the fans should switch off after a period of time. The fans run all the time as the A/C condensor is mounted in front of the radiator and needs constant airflow to protect the compressor.

is this the same if i turn both the econ and auto off as i normally just run the car like this with both turned off (i.e not shown on the display) and just the inside fans on....if that makes sense.

My understanding is this:

ECON: Climatronic will try to automatically control the temperature of the cabin. To do this, it has control of interiror fan speed and can heat the air coming through the vents (as this heat is available for free from the engine). It is not allowed to use the a/c compressor to cool the air. Up here in Scotland, this mode works 99% of the time as the outside air temp is usually lower than the 20 deg that I like the cabin to sit at.

AUTO: Same as above but the a/c compressor (and so radiator fans) can be used to cool and dehumidify the cabin air as required. In this mode, the fans apparently run continuously.

Not AUTO or ECON (Blank): The climatronic does not try to control the air temperature of the cabin. Instead, it simply allows you to choose the temperature of air coming through the vents and the interior fan speed yourself. In this mode, the a/c is still running as you might want icy cold air and so I expect the fans to run continuously as in the AUTO case.

So, in short, switch the climatronic to ECON, wait a few minutes and the fans should stop (provided the engine isn't so warm that it wants to switch the fans on itself).

Many thanks for that, have tried it and thankfully been panicing for nothing, maybe i should read the manual next time, but hey i'm male and we dont do that!

On a plus side it means i've been driving for the last 3 weeks with the air con constantly on and averaging between 33 and 40mpg to and from work which is pretty much combined driving! bonus

Well either that or i need to stop driving miss daisy!
