Cambelt change + Service

Featured Replies

I was just wondering what people thought of these prices which I have been quoted for cambelt change and full service on a Fabia Vrs. Its a 54 plate and has done 46000 miles. I don't want to get ripped off, but I'm sure Skoda said they'd replace a cambelt for about the same, so I assume this includes some extra parts/labour as I also enquired about having the water pump done at the same time.

Hi there.

Thanbks for the request.

A timing belt change, including the belt, tensioning roller, damper, relay roller, coolant pump and auxiliary belt is: £313.06

A full Service for the same vehicle is approx. £145 all inc.

Hope this helps. Any questions or to book in, please contact us.

Kind Regards.

Any thoughts on the prices or any suggestions where I can get the work done cheaper from a reputable independent trader from the Derby area would be appreciated.

Hi

There are a ton of posts about timing belt changes, just search timing belt. I paid £270 (i think) ish for that (aux, timing inc etcs in the kit, water pump) and that was supplying parts myself. £313 is good, the parts wont vary in price much and unless you have a mechanic as a friend, you'll find it hard to get labour under £40 an hour.

A full service for £145 also sounds good, I paid £160 for a major service (filters, oil + fuel + air) supplying own parts.

I've had tons of quotes for the timing belt alone at £400+, if you like the garage then go along with it.

Not used the garage before, but have had it recommended from a relative, and they're a tuning company on this website somewhere, so I'm assuming they are fairly reputable...! I do have a mechanic as a friend, but he's very busy at the minute and I'd like to have the work done while I'm on holiday for the week so I don't have to be without the car!

Thanks for the help and advice. I'll probably book it in to be honest, better to be safe than sorry where cambelts are concerned, and it is overdue one. Eek!

Seems reasonable - I think the parts are around £150 trade. :)

Is this a Skoda dealership, or independent? Just wondering as the previous owner of mine was charged over £700 for the 50k mile/5 year service (this included a standard cam belt change, but no other parts were changed, according to the invoice) by the local Skoda dealership...

I recently had the same done for a 120,000mile service - quotes were generally around £460 for both at both indies and main dealers.

However, I did eventually get it done for £300 including parts via an acquantiance who owns a recovery/garage service... parts amounted to £197.

It's an independent. The garage was found by going through the Revo Technik website. I think a relative may have been there before for advice though. Unsure if it is the same place or not. May ring round a few other places to see how much they'd charge, including some VAG specialists to get some other prices. The quote seems reasonable based on what everyone else is saying on here though.

Pretty good overall. I would get the waterpump changed at the same time though, seeing as you're just paying for the part to be changed then, as it can be done at the same time as the belt so you save on labour.

Steve

Main dealer quotes for a cambelt/ water pump change seem to vary wildly. I also live in the East Midlands and a phone around of local dealers saw prices vary from £350 to £280.

In the current climate I have found dealers are prepared to negotiate/compete on costs and the lower quote above included a 15% discount on the cambelt change because I was also prepared to have the 60k service done with them too at the same time (which incidentally was also £70 cheaper than the highest price quoted by another dealer).

So it pays to shop around, and you may find a main dealer is little/ if any more expensive than an indy.

Thanks Rick. Any chance you could let me know whereabouts you got yours done? PM me if you don't want to put it on here. I travel to the East Midlands frequently, so might be worth me ringing them up! Cheers.

Bezzy, haven't had the work done yet as its not due for another 1,500 or so miles - just wanted to get an idea of what I am going to be in for price wise!

The best quote as detailed in my previous thread came from Rainworth Skoda - they are based in the Mansfield area I believe. Hope that helps (I have not used this dealer myself before but have heard positive reports).

If you can get the cambelt work done at an official Skoda dealer for a similar price to an independent IMO it makes sense to do so.

Cheers

This was my thinking as well! Looks like I'll be waiting till after my holiday now anyway! Less than a week to go now! I won't be able to get the car there either as I'm working Saturday and going on Saturday night!

Will bear this in mind when I come back though.

Thanks for everyone's help on this thread!
