fuel guage behaviour and noisy speedo!

Featured Replies

Hi all!!!

2 things to ask, i know the speedo issue has been discussed before but i wanted some clarification.

first off, my speedo has an awful clicking noise that is quite audible at speed, louder than the engine in fact at 60+mph Is this either the cable or the speedo itself? also, my speedo is incapable of showing accurate speed under 20mph as the needle wobbles about all over the place. once past 30 its fine.

secondly, my fuel guage is entirely stable until the level get to about 1/4 tank, then hills and corners affect the reading. would it be possible to connect an electrolyte capacitor in parallel accross the wires going to it from the level sensor, to smooth it out and give it a "buffer" ? what size capacitor would be suitable?

thanks

Gavin

about the fuel gauge...

the fuel gauge is feed by two positives cables and one negative, it will always display diferent reading when turning corners etc.., if you place a capasitor on the line it would alter the middle level reading on the gauge

about the speedo, you can always remove the speedo cable check it, re-grease it and see if it cures the illness, (i had the same illnes as you, when i changed the transmission oil to the correct 75W90 the speedo displayed good reading at all speed)

I'll bet your fuel gauge isn't as bad as my old fav one. Go around the corner and it bounced up and down everywhere. The replacement does change level when going up hill etc but is much smoother.

Unscrew the speedo cable from the top of the gearbox and make sure the cable is straight and there are no kinks. You could also turn the inside cable by hand to try identify where any click comes from.
