Same old vRS Oil Question

Featured Replies

So, last two oil changes I've been using castrol 5w/30 fully synthetic. Popped into VW dealer yesterday to get a throttle body gasket and enquired what il they actually recommend for the 1.8T.

Really helpful guy, phoned his colleague at Skoda to be sure and came back with the answer that the 1.8T vRS prefers (and is factory filled with) semi-synth 10w/40 (specifically VW's own synta oil). I used to use this on my Golf VR6 as the engine was getting on a bit but I am suprised to hear the vRS is also specced with a slightly heavier semi-synth.

Anyone else using synta?

Cheers,

iep

Yep

I always use it, I get for just over £13 for litres as well .....which is nice.

Never had any problems so far at 95K hard mileage as well (touch wood)

As recommended by our Lummox

What about synta gold?

They don't do it anymore, I was told it's platinum now which covers the PD engines as well.

I used too use the gold.

Ahh, the tradeparts website still lists the gold. Do use the platinum or just the standard for your vRS?

I use the Platinum now www.vwspares.co.uk

Thats the one.

Thats good as ive just given my car a oil change and used mobil super s semi 10/40:thumbup:

I also use 10w/40. I change it every 6000 miles though as I do use the car quite hard.

I use 10w40 shell helix semi synth because my mate gets me it for nothing from where he works and i change it every 5000 miles:thumbup:

The European market Mk 1 Octavia vRS was factory-filled with spec VW 503 00 oil - a 0W-30 fully synthetic LongLife oil. Fuchs was one of the OEM suppliers. That spec has since been superceded by VW 504 00 - which is a 5W-30 oil. See below for a list of oils which meet the new spec.

This discussion seems to have vanished.

i work for TPS and i put the platinum 5w40 oil in mine. think its just personal preference which you want to use whether it be 10w40 synta or the 5w30 long life or the 5w40 platinum, all top spec oils so i dont suppose it matter too much

The Platinum oil in the link is cheap!

This post clears up a dilema for me too, last change I did TPS supplied 5/30 I think but when I was lest at The Phirm they told me to use 10/40. They all run 300bhp+ out of their own 1.8t's so they now what they are on about.

yes not a bad price, its £15.85 from tps

my car came with Shell Helix 0W30 but was changed to Castrol Magnitec 5W30 at its first service then I did a change before it was due to 0W30 again as I felt the car was nicer with it in, then its been serviced again with Water pump and belt and had same castrol 5W30 in it,

I think the 10W40 is for the ones on QG2 service shedules, I dont really get the thing with that as mine has been serviced pritty much every 13-14 months having done between 18 and 19K, I take it that for High miles its best to stay on the QG1 rather than QG2?

Yeah the longlife service (QG1) is fine but make sure its the Castrol Edge 5w30 (Gold Bottle) and not the Magnatec 5W30 (Green Bottle) as this is an oil based around the Ford Zetec Engines...

mmmm its been running fine lol, it said magnitec on the receipts not edge. is there a major diff between them? I alwasy thought that oil was oil so long as you got the right 0w30 or 5w30?

I bought my oil from my local dealership last year when I serviced my Mk1 vRS. I asked for whatever they use & they sold me Quantum Longlife III. This is a 5W-30 VW 504 oil & it's a VW own brand according to the container.

£36 inc V.A.T. from the dealer last year. I thought that was a very good price; Halfords are quoting about £45 for equivalent oil.

ooo lol I just been advised to get that lol and it is a very good price too for 5L seen as most only do 4l bottles for some reason.

I am happy with the price too lol;-)
