HD tv - good deal??

Featured Replies

I've started looking for my next LCD tv and seen what I think is a good deal. It's a Samsung LE40A789 for £800 with LED backlight and it says it's a series 8. What made me consider it was that I've always had Samsung tv's and they've never let me down yet. The LE40A789 had a fantastic quality image and when I looked, it was only coming from an aerial lead and not even scart!! My hope will be that with SkyHD+ it will be stuning. My only question was, if this was actually a good price/TV. £800 would be my maximum price and 42" the maximum size.

Seems to be getting a good rep, the Series 8 from Sammy. Stock seems to be an issue I've heard, so if the price is right and it's in stock, I'd get it :)

If you go for one of the LED TV's, then budget for a soundsystem as well. The sound from the builtin speakers is truely awfull, more like using a set of laptop speakers. The picture is good, but the sound is terrible.

Good point. Suppose this is a by-product of the LED manufacturing process and having less 'chassis' room to fit speakers into! Exactly the same problem as a laptop in fact :)

This particular model is a non uk model, the UK model is the 786, which is discon tinued now. its not the current 7 series. You can find a review here: Samsung LE40A786 Review

Not sure of the differences between uk and european versions, but may affect warranty. You may be able to find a uk version if you google:thumbup:

Not too worried by the speaker as I have a DTS surround system that works a treat. My current Samsung only has one HDMI and is only 1080i. It's a real pain switching between HD devices as I had to buy a 3 port switch. The LE40A789 has 4 HDMI ports and should be more than enough for the time being.

I found the Samsung on sale in a highstreet retailer, so I'm concerned if that is a European model and not a UK model. The display TV in the shop had "series 8" on it, but I can't find any refernce to this being a series 8 TV

That's no suprise! Check out sammys website if you need any clarification. I would avoid any store that misleads potential customers:thumbdwn:

If you mean Currys, they seem to get their own models of most stuff. That includes TV's.

Was a local catalogue discount shop. Anything thats end of line in the freemans catalogue gets sold off cheap. The TV should be £1000 but reduced to clear for £800. Probably why the model number isn't quite right. Stilla good deal though. They did have a 50" LG Plasma for £500 which was a slight second, but too big for my room.

It's very unlikely it's a Series-8 then, as they're not going to be 'end of line'. Most likely it's a Series-7.

Don't forget with John Lewis you get a 5 year guarantee as well as free delivery

Just checked it again today and it is a series 7. It is also the LE40A786 model and not the european model I mentioned at the start of the thread.

The same shop is doing a Sony Bravia 46" 46v3000 for £849 and looks a good deal too.

Thought as much, as the Series-8s seem to be quite sought after at the moment and stock in short supply. So it didn't make sense for them to be trying to sell them off cheap

I don't reckon that's as good a deal on a Series-7 personally. As mentioned, I would check out John Lewis and also Richer Sounds - if just to get a good feel for the TVs you're interested in 'in the flesh' and also as they tend to be setup properly too, and available to try out/demo etc.

Is the trade-in still current on Bravias? Or maybe that's just at authorised Sony dealers, not sure...

Costco also do 5yr warranties if you are or know a member

Went for the Samsung LE40A786r2f that I originally mentioned. I asked if they would do me a better price and I was suprised when they agreed to knock £50 off the price. I got it for £749 in the end and I'm well chuffed! I set it up this afternoon and I have been watching SkyHD for the last few hours. Even though SkyHD is 1080i, the picture quality is unreal. Next on my list is a Blu-ray drive for my PC and then I can stream directly to my TV through my Media Tank. Will be alot cheaper than buying a blu-ray player.
