A question about my new VRs

Featured Replies

Good Evening All

Ive been searching the forums regarding a question on my VRs but havent had much luck dragging anything up as it were. I picked up my 56 Plate (48000 miles) last friday and have got use to owning my first diesel and generally having fun with it. Now i know that diesels are generally noisy but as ive got to know the car i can hear something which to me sounds amiss. At about 2000 revs no matter which gear as i throttle up i hear what i can only describe as a slight chirping noise, almost a vibration noise. The noise only stays until about 2400 revs and then as the engine is reving faster the noise seems to disappear. I was wondering before i try and take it back to the garage if this noise is a normal sort of noise from the diesel lump or a known problem.

cheers for any opinions

Ian

not turbo whistle? chirp? maybe loose heat sheild?

Could be EGR valve modulating and that's normal.

Turbo, I would have thought, mine whistles from about 1600 to the piont where the engine noise overcomes the turbo noise.

Try it with the window down as the turbo is more pronounced to the lughole amd see.

Mine makes a 'chirp' noise if I floor it from about 2000 but I have been led to believe it's something to do with the EGR or VTG mechanism.

Nout to worry about I would have thought.

See if it gets any worse in the next few days and if it's bad, book it in.

Mines done 90k now and it still makes noises...

Whatever it is mine does it as well and as done for 30,000 trouble free miles :) Seemed to get louder after the de-cat so I was going with turbo whistle.

Same here!

Mine "chirps" momentarily under hard acceleration at some point in the rev range 1900/2200. Been doing this since I got it 2.5+ years ago and nearly 25K miles.

I've learned to avoid this by a slight change in driving style - light foot it through this range then you can give it the welly. Try this and let's know if that stops it "chirping".

Hope this puts your mind at rest.

Mine does this aswell, around 2000 rpm under load. Only lasts about a second. It's been in to the garage but nothing evident and no fault codes shown. I've learned to ignore it!

Fan belt

Had me worried until I sussed it out - asked 'my mechanic', said it was pretty normal due to the torque of the PD engine.

Sounds like it'll be the turbo spooling up, going on what you describe....

Thank you for all of the comments, its made me feel a lot better reading everyones advice, i think because its my first diesel , i can hear all sorts of things. Im glad that it doesnt seem to be something to worry about

thanks again everyone

Ian

Mine does it and I was going to ask one of these days, so thank you for asking. I only noticed it when driving to a garage on the Moors and I had my radio turned off (witch is unusual). I initially thought it was my steering lock making a noise due to vibrations on the floor, but it's not. I did think it could be the turbo but I thought it's the wrong noise for it, although I am comparing it with the sound of the turbo makes on an early Scooby.

Thank you, for giving me suggestions of what it could be.

ha ha late reply to this thread but i was gonna ask the same question until i read this! mine does it also, its more of a quick growel although could be a chirp but only does it on heavy load and only lasts a second. Im certain its a valve release going on (EGR). If you dont like it dont drive so hard lol

Mine makes a shakey chipy noise when the turbo boost comes in been told not to worry about it.
