Went for a quick spin in my vrs dsg octy this evening.

I was going down a hill when the box shifted down into second from 5th causing the engine to rev like a mad thing. I have never noticed this happen before, I thought the box was knackered for a horrible split second.

Anyone else experienced any odd shifts with DSG? This is the first for me

It should not over rev as its supposed to have in built protection to prevent it from happening. Might be worth getting it checked if under warranty.

Seems like it is working like it should. Engine braking is what it's doing, and it's just like I do in my manual. It won't have over-revved as the gearbox won't let it, so it just sounds like a well thought out feature.

Id keep an eye on the box, might have just been a one off but if it carries on it could well be the mecahtronics unit on its way out

Oh ****! It did it again yesterday, Going down a hill, it shifted into 2nd. It might be normal, but after 4K I have not noticed this before. Believe me I have been watching this box like a hawk. It simply has not done this before

I drive down a hill daily into work and when you apply the brake the box does always change down, possibly too early, which can give the impression of it being jerky. I now just kick it across to manual to get past that part of the hill. If you are in too high a gear the box will still override you anyway.

That's a bu**er I like using engine braking, especially on some of the 1:4 gradients you experience on the A39 (Porlock & Countisbury Hills), it's a useful thing on manuals.

So from what you've said & my understanding is that you can't do engine braking with a DSG box unless you put it into manual mode. Correct?

Mine does it too. Going down a steep hill near where I live, go onto the brakes to slow decent and my DSG7 will drop to 4 then 3 causing the engine to rev. That produces too much engine braking to my way of thinking so I've got into the habit of selecting and holding 4th manually on that particular hill and letting the brakes do the rest (just like I did in my old manual). You always have engine braking available on the DSG, even in 7th! Manual mode just let's you control how much.

I've tried getting that translated and ended up with a rather comical result...

My DSG certainly doesn't engine brake, though i've got the 6 speed wet box. Unless I put it in manual or drop the gear down with the paddles it will quickly run away with itself down a hill. Its in at the dealers for a new mechatronics unit so i'll be interested to see what it does when i get it back

I think there's one or two glitches in the grammar though, probably because it's a literal translation.

If the sensor is triggered detecting you're going downhill (5%+ I suspect) and your on the brakes long enough it'll change down. Mine happily coasts on shallower inclines but always changes down at the same time on the same steep hill so it's appears programmed that way.

Worth dropping it into the dealer, to see if there's any software updates for it. A mate at work had strange things happening with his A3 CR140 DSG (jerky down and up changes) and after it's come back from the dealer he said it's like a new car; the box is much smoother and his MPG is up too :thumbup:

hill hold doesnt work on tilt sensors, it will hold you on the flat too

I have the ESP (optional in Belgium), and the service book mentiones that the hill hold only works uphill and with a minimum of 5%.

same thing is happening to me, and I have being doing same thing, or if I feel confidence, I touch very gently to gas, and automatically it increase...

If I go along the A39 in Somerset & Devon and traverse the notorious Porlock & Countisbury hills in my Golf, I use engine braking for the last bit of the hill namely the 1:4 sections as well as the brakes, I'm not too worried if it makes the engine rev quiet hard, I usually select 2nd or 3rd gear, the signs tell you to select a low gear, so I wouldn't be overly worried about revving it hard.

You know you've got it wrong when you get near the red-line...
