normal uleaded petrol or super unleaded

Featured Replies

I have recently read in a car magazine the VW golf GTI needs to run on super unleaded petrol as recomended by VW, is this the same engine as the one in the Octavia VRS, if so should i be putting unleaded in my VRS LTD.

Can you still get super,?????????? I know its not sold around here

It's recommended that the car uses super unleaded.

I don't know if you can do damage to the car by using normal unleaded, I think there are some post that say that some faults have resulted from not using super unleaded but I don't know it that's just anecdotal.

IMHO the car drives better on SUL and gets better mpg. I can only describe the difference as the car acting like it's fully loaded, it just feels heavier on normal UL.

The better mpg from SUL is normally enough to offset the extra price, just.

I only use UL when I'm stuck.

I agree with the above. However, the normal factory standard engine is 'detuned' to allow for poorer grades of petrol and varying climates etc so normal unleaded should still be OK. I also agree that there is some fuel economy benefits with super unleaded in the standard car such that the cost difference is negated slightly (although maybe not totally). A remapped car (if you go that route) removes some of that 'detuning' and imho and should be run on super-unleaded routinely. I think that is the general consensus also.

Sure - BP Ultimate, Shell V-Power and Tesco Super (aka 'Tescos Finest' 99 RON) and a few others I'm sure

AFAIK, the 2.0 TSI/TFSI needs to be run on 97 as a minimum, and use on 95ron can be done for a limited period with reduced performance.

Says something like that in the manual, I seem to recall!

Been using Tesco99 for both our 2.0TFSI engined cars without a prob....Car idles and runns smoother.

On occasions used standard UL petrol, but for constant motorway runs. No harm done.

I was looking into this for my puny 1.4 tsi. Anything 100kW or above (150 hp) appears to need 98 RON petrol for maximum efficiency (despite the Octavia brochure stating 95 will do).

I understand that 97 RON is normally sold as 'Super Unleaded' here (UK). Whether the 2 RON makes a noticable difference when switching to a 99 RON like Tesco or Shell's and whether it's worth forking out for a 102 RON if available, I don't know.

We run the Golf on 95ron...it doesn't pink & runs fine.

Every now & then I give it a couple of tanks of Shell V power...it does feel quicker & a little smoother...and it's meant to clean your engine better than the 95 ron juice.

I think it's a little pricey to fill up with V power all the time, but Turbo cars most definately prefer it IMHO.

Does anybody know how the different Diesel brews compare?

Every car I've used with super has given more MPG and run better than on 95, and the gain in MPG has far outweighed the extra cost :)

the new manual for the facelift 2.0tsi now says 95 with a minimum of 91, no mention at all of needing higher octane anymore..fuel filler cap is the same, whereas on teh tfsi is had super/98 ron in the manual and on the filler cap

It was the old FSI system that had an issue with the **** fuel then!

I've read that too that the newer engine isn't so bothered about needing SU

Lots of companies had issues with FSI/GDI.

I think is was something along the lines of fully stratified injection plus gasoline direct injection == coked up engine. The super fuel probably helps with this in some way.

my car runs crap on anything less than 97ron IMO. 99 ron fuel minimum goes in there everytime.

to be fair i cant see why people put anything less. on average id say 99 ron is about 7-10 pence a litre more that regular fuel. thats only £4.20- £6 per tank.

what do you get. a cleaner engine whilst prolonging the life of the engine, increased performance and better MPG.

TFSI is renowned for clogging up with crap in the engine due to the nature of its design so better fuel should also improve his

its a no brainer form me.

If you spend more than £50 @tescos you get 7 pence/litre off their fuel. so that make s their 99 ron less than a pound a litre

Our FSI runs just as well on Sainsbury's 95 as it did on BP ultimate.
