Poorly-sick vRS! How many of you have experienced this?

Featured Replies

Hi chaps!

Poor bird. She has started mis-firing and the engine management light is doing its nut! There's a funny smell too.

Now, either she has been drinking Vodka instead of her usual Optimax - hence getting the 'judders' or (as the garage suggested) the coil pack has gone caput! :(

Is this a very common problem? The garage wanted to know because they said that if it was they would report it to Skoda HQ.

Top marks to my local Skoda dealer (Grey Gables, Witney). It only went wrong tonight at 5:05 pm exactly ... I immediately phoned the garage who were still open and they were most distressed that they couldn't get it fixed for me this evening!!!! Ahhh, bless 'em! I said it was okay, and that I could wait until Monday but that I had an important meeting and that I would need a nice courtesy car. I suggested the owners Aston Martin Vantage but they politely declined and offered me a Fabia instead.

Anyway, let me know and I'll let them know (if you see what I mean).

Cheers,

Lou

:D

ps, great site ... well done you lot!

Lou

First of all , nice to see you again! Glad to see you've registered with Briskoda! And yes , your car has just eat its first coilpack ... just make sure that the new one the dealer fits has a part number which ends in the suffix 'J' , as these are the modified packs which have just replaced the suffix'H' coilpacks , I'm pretty sure they've been modified to improve reliability , hence the new suffix letter. Hope your baby is back to full heath soon!

Hi Lou nice to see ya here!

Hi Lou, good to see you back.......

...oh, and welcome to the coilpack club :D

Found this thread on 20VTurbo.com - dated 28-11-02.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whelp, 3rd one blew today. I think its two of em this time. ****, **** VW!!! Now Im driving around in a ******* ford focus.

Anyway, here's some useful info:

1-There is an imminent recall on these coilpacks (in Canada). In the US, the recall will be set within a week if not now.

2-27,000 coilpacks have been ordered by VW Canada to distribute to Canadian dealerships.

3-There is an interim redesign of the coilpacks that should be here by the beginning of the year...NB this will not be the final design.

4-I am rightfully ****** as I park my car more often at the ****** dealership than I do in my own ****** garage.

5-End of announcement.

To all 1.8Ters, enjoy your impending visit to the dealership.

I've only got one more to go! I have had them go on cylinders 1,2,3 just missing no 4 for the full set. Actually I cheated, I swapped no 4 just to be on the safe side. Still got 2 spares and a part used just in case.

:D

PS Hi Lou! [img:21da90c5c1]http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/bigwave.gif[/img:21da90c5c1]

H and/or J version failures?

All H, now carrying 2 Js as spares

That's very encouraging to hear. Has anyone had the later J version fail on them?

And can I ask again, how do you change a coil pack? Is it possible to unclip the connectors on Nos 1 - 3 plugs and simply pull the coil up and off? If so, how does the connector unclip? I would quite like to check my coil pack part number, but I don't want to break the connectors - my local dealer doesn't have any spares.

This coil pack failure rate is obviously down to all your bad driving  techniques. Us RS Taxi drivers have never had a problem...................yet.

In the last week I have been to four VW dealerships , one Seat ,and one Audi , as I sell tools to garages , and not one of them has a coil pack in stock . The Audi garage actually has a TT in the showroom with no coil packs on it at all , been robbed to keep customers happy . But the good news is that so far they haven't had any problems with the modified ones , that is to say the ones with part numbers ending with a J . Here,s hoping that mine are the modified ones :)

a recall here sounds inevitable as it's such a huge problem. my current status:

3 H

1 J

getting another j off des at the northern meet.

so 2 potential problem causers left. will have to speak to horners when the car goes in for its service on wednesday.

Ah, all done! Took it in this morning and they had it fixed in a jiffy! I am now the proud owner of one coilpack ending in 'J'! :)

I told the garage all about your responses so that they can put there tuppence-worth forward to Skoda but sounds like it is a 'very' common problem. I guess if all the dealers are complaining then they have to do a recall soon?

Anyway, from what you all say it sounds like I'll have three more visits before I'm done! Oh, what fun! It's hilarious (if a little unnerving) driving the car with the coilpack gone ... it was like being in a boneshaker! I could swear people could see the car juddering!

Cheers!

Lou

:D

i know what you mean lou, bloody scary as it just started juddering like mad on the motorway. plus, the check engine light started flashing and as my APR chip utilises the CEL, at first i thought, oh sugar, the chip's gone and fnuked up my engine. of course, sense prevailed ( it helped also having ian on the phone describing the symptoms exactly - i thought i was the doctor!) and soon realised it was a coil.

have a friend who has had 2 go on his TT and has had them ALL replaced in the last couple of days to the newer, hopefully fault-free, version. every forum you check with the VAG 1.8T engine, this problem is repeated again and again........

BaaHeed - maybe it's the Scottish weather, but mine seem to be fine so far (12k miles to date). 8)

Just for reference - is it obvious when a coil pack goes and what should I expect to see / hear / feel?

Cheers

My first one went at 33,000 miles, so 12k is not that miraculous. The second went at 44,000, and the third at 48,000. Now on 63,500 so I should be due another failure soon!

Symptoms are that your car sounds really rough, doesn't pull cleanly (and why should it it only running on 3 cyclinders) and the check engine light either flashes or stays on permanently.

You will know something is wrong with it!

Matt here.........

Nice site, now back on topic

Well the RS actually went down whilst I was driving, I'd just left for work and had been driving for about 10 minutes. I came out of a 30 limit, gave it some gas and splutter splutter, managemant light blinking like a good 'un!

You'll know when it goes, you can't really miss it unless your used to driving 3 cylinder cars

Needless to say I limped home and pick up my motor and got Lou to sort it  :D:wink:

Matt you are a true gentleman.
