wipers don't stop

Featured Replies

Guys please I need help with my wipers.

The wipers are moving all the time when I push the lever down. They should wipe only once.

The problem occurs in 50% cases, other 50% it's ok.

The fuse is ok.

please help

Mine would come on randonly, and when I used the wipe once function, they would just keep going on continuous. I just removed the fuse under the dash for a couple of days, and its been fine ever since. I think maybe removing it and plugging it back in cleaned the contacts a bit

Thanks for your reply.

So you say you took out the fuse and put it back after a couple of days?

Were your wipers working when the fuse was gone?

You can try re setting it (disconnect then re connect) but it ll more than likely need a new motor as the control unit inside will have failed do to some water ingress:thumbdwn:

I would suggest not....

Agree water ingress is a typical failure especially with rear wiper motors. My rear wiper started working when turned off.

I had a problem like this last week; the front wipers came on by themselves soon after starting the car, continuous at the lower speed setting. Couldn't turn them off no matter what I tried. Found that I could make them wipe continuous at the faster speed setting but all other lever/switch positions resulted in the lower speed continuous wipe.

There were some interesting other symptoms though ... if I switched on the rear wiper the fronts auto-parked and after a short time the tailgate warning light came on!

I checked each of the fuses in the panel at the end of the dashboard, pulling each one out and checking continuity before re-inserting. Didn't look at relays because I haven't had the car long enough to work out how to get at them ;-)

A couple of days later and they seemed to work normally. At least the local garage has seen the aberrant behaviour so maybe they'll be able to effect a long term fix next week.

I would be surprised if water getting on somewhere was the cause, as the problem started after the car had been parked all day under cover.

The problem is almost certainly down to the rear wiper motor. I had exactly the same issue, could not turn off the front wipers. Unplugged the rear wiper motor and they stopped.

Screenwash leaks inside the wiper motor gearbox and eventually back out onto the circuit board that control the wiper. As this appears to be part of the CAN system on the car, any errant signals back from this circuit board mean that all kinds of odd things can happen with the cars wipers and washers, front or rear. In my case, I had the headlights on, so they also got washed each time I went over a bump!

I can't imagine it being a fuse. A fuse is either on or off, working or not. It's what's further down the line that affects the function of the components.

I had this happening once or twice with the rear wiper on my A-Class. After turning the engine off for a short while it was OK again. Probably water ingress into the motor or relay.

Agree with this. The circuit is all interlinked. I unplugged the rear wiper motor when it started playing up and got no other symptons to the front.

Maybe you shoud try the same?

Thank you guys for your replies. I'm utterly impressed on the activity on this forum. You're the man :)

The problem in my car is that I don't have any rear wiper. It looked strange for me as it's hatchback car but then ...... I got used to it.

Should I have the rear wiper?

It's 1999 Skoda Octavia GLXi automatic.

Our car is in the garage today - I mentioned your comments as a possible cause, and earlier this afternoon they rang up to say it was exactly that which was causing the problem. A dollop of labour and some relatively cheap replacements parts, and it should be fixed when I collect it tomorrow ;-)

List on the wiper motor is I think is £66 + vat and it should take less than 30 mins to fit. Changed mine last Friday.

Most difficult part is re-fitting the trim inside the hatch, but I've done it so often over that last few months that I've got it down to a fine art!

The pre-facelift cars didn't have a rear wiper, so that rules out that as a cause.

Other possibilities are a sticky relay, faulty wiper stalk of a fault in the self park mechanism on the motor.

If you move the stalk upwards to the intermittent position or to one of the "on" positions and switch it back off, do the wipers stop?

Took mine off the other day due to noticing water trickling down the inside of the boot glass when open. :thumbdwn:

No erractic behavior yet so i'm hoping i've got to it before it's caused any problems. I know most people advise to take the whole thing out and bung it up. But i'd like to keep the rear wash/wipe. Is changing the grommet difficult? Assuming that's all i'd need to change to ensure it's water tight again? It did cross my mind to just attack it with some sealent.

How's about a few tips for when it comes to refitting that dreaded boot trim!

Re-fitting the boot trim isn't too bad, so long as you fit it from the bottom edge not the top.

1. Make sure that the metal clips are all attached to the tailgate, not the plastic trim (the longer leg goes away from the glass).

2. Offer up the plastic trim and feed the strap though its hole.

3. Locate the lower clips of the trim in the white cups on the tailgate and clip the bottom ones into position.

4. While supporting the trim panel, lower the tailgate so that you can see the metal clips through the rear window (now comes the fiddly bit).

5. Pull and twist the upper edge of the trim panel so that the plastic peg goes over the long leg of the metal clip when you release it and repeat this for each of the metal clips.

6. Give the rest of the panel a few thumps to make sure all of the clips are fully home (not too hard or you will break the white plastic cups in the tailgate.

Hope this helps.
