Radio display 'flashing'

Featured Replies

The radio display on my Y reg tdi Elegance started flashing between 'PLAY' and 'Channel name' - no sound out. I have never put a tape in the thing since getting the car. Any thoughts anyone??

The radio in my first Fab did exactly the same thing (during the test drive as it happens !!)

Nothing could be done to salvage it - replaced under warranty.

Service manager at local dealer said he'd seen a few of these Skoda/Grundigs go the same way.

Cheers

As it's out of warranty I guess I'm stuffed - thanks for the info

Hi hjg - me again.

I replaced the radio/cassette on my other Fab with a CD player.

If you get no joy repairing your existing radio I've got a perfectly serviceable MS402 rad/cass that came out of my Elegance, so it should slot directly into your car. Let me know if it's of any interest and we'll do a bit of lightweight haggling.

Getting back to your original fault - the unit seems to think it's trying to play a cassette, then realises there's no tape in there so switches back to radio. If they hadn't changed the radio for me I was going to go inside it to check for microswitches that a cassette would trip as it is pushed into the slot, and give them a clean. I seem to remember that actually putting a tape into the machine didn't result in any music either. Luckily for me I bought that car with a couple of months warranty still on it and there was no problem getting it swapped.

All the best.

Just scrap it and get a cheap aftermarket one - it will probably be better than the Symphony anyway! :)

Thanks Tuscan30 I'll have aplay 2nite - may take you up on the offer if I get no luck

How does the radio come out of the dash?

Now I am baffled!

The fault has gone away!

Sequence of events:

In car @ 06.45, radio always on, switch on ign - radio plays; start engine, radio goes into flash mode - no sound

Finish work early (make use of good weather) ~ 10.30, in car radio flashing, park @ home @ 11.00 - leave there it 10 minutes ago ~19.00.

Get in, switch on and radio plays sweet as a nut! Start engine - still OK. Try a tape - first time ever - plays great

Still it's still working so hope for best.

Thanks guys.

Lucky man - I hope it carries on working for you.

If you do need to take it out of the dash you'll need a couple of slim hooked tools (occasionally see them on eBay for about a quid) or try using a couple of electrical tywraps (cable ties). Push em into the oblong slots near edges of radio and if they are rigid enough they'll disengage the small latches allowing you to withdraw the radio forwards.

Cheers,

Pete

Hope springs eternal - and is dashed on the rocks of reality!!

This morning:

In car, ign on, radio plays - wait 30 secs, start engine, radio OK, drive off - FLASHING display! - but this time it comes and goes - radio 10 secs flashing 15 secs - variable. Put tape in and it plays fine with no interuption. Eject tape - back to radio/flashing alternates!

Thanks Tuscan30

I'll try getting the beast out 2nite - have a look at the tape microswitches as you suggested - seems like a possibility.

Regards

@Tuscan30

Tried again lunchtime: Ign on, radio played OK - maybe one or two 'flashes' then continued for ~10 mins. Tape in/out radio still fine. Start engine still OK, rev up OK, bang dash/radio with hand - still OK. Have to see tonight when I drive home!

Tried to make some 'removal keys' - cut up strips from old credit card 5mm wide, pushed 2 of them into slots by 50mm, but radio still felt firmly in - do the strips need to be longer, do I need to 'jiggle them, or is the radio just tight in it's housing??

I found that a parking scratch card folded into three lengthwise and stuffed hard into the left corner of the cassette mouth , worked for a couple of weeks. Then it stopped working  soon after SWMBO left the lights on and now it just says CODE which I think is a type of flu so perhaps it was ill all the time ??

@tonylegg

Are you saying that you had similar 'flashing' between PLAY and the channel name - that I had?

hjg,

sorry for delay in responding.

The tool supplied with radio is 7mm wide, 1mm thick and disengages the latches when it's 30mm in. An old junior hacksaw blade will do the job too (mind you don't scratch the fascia).

With both latches free the radio should pull out reasonably easily - only the multi plug and the aerial connections on the back - both of which have plenty of free play to allow radio to come forward.

If the picture loads up ok you'll get the idea - the hook bit at the end doesn't seem to be critical, like I said the hacksaw blade does work.

Have fun.

Very many thanks for the info - so my cut up strips of credit card should work OK.

The latest report is looking better. Goimg home last night, started with radio off, start car, drive of then switch on - one 'flash' then radio played fine for 10 miles home. Switched radio off when parked in my garage l;ast night. Did same this morning - radio off, start & drive off, radio on - no flashes this time, radio OK all the way to work.

I'll try variations when I get some more confidence

Another m8 of mine suggested that as cassette players use 'optical sensors' (LEDs & Photo diodes) more than microswitches nowadays it could be dirt/fluff somewhere.

Anyway the radio is 'OK-ish' for now.

Sorry for next day reply (work!)

Yes it flashed Play/ Radio Jersey (in this case of course) and sometimes would have radio sound for a few secs . The Cassette presence sensor was certainly a contributory factor in some way but how??

Tuscan 30 & Tonylegg

Back to square zero!

Started flashing on way home last night after ~ 5 mins - same thing this morning coming into work!

Managed to get the Rx out of the dash but could not work out how to take it apart. The front facia seems to hold the top & bottom, but when the plastic 'nibs' that hold that in place are released the front has loads of 'bits' connected to I chickened out and put it back together. Might try and get a local repair.

Thanks for you guys help.

No prob - best of luck.

Pete
