Power steering pump repair

Featured Replies

Hello

Has anyone repaired a power steering pump. My pump is noisy. It is not leaking but the outgoing shaft has some play.

I wonder if I should buy a scrapped one for approx. 80 Euro, but that one could also be bad so the safest would be to repair the existing one if that is possible?

I think repairing a PAS pump is a specialist job, so you're down to buy new, buy used or buy exchange (if available).

That said, most reputable dismantlers will let you test parts before purchase, and/or supply with a limited component only warranty.

80 euros is a bit expensive for a second hand pump, i recently got a pas pump off ebay for £10... shop around, the 1.6 felicia uses the same pump as a 6n polo (94-99) so you should be able to find one fairly easily, but if it's a 1.3 it will need to come from a felicia 1.3 if that makes sense

they aren't very easy to take apart anyway, but i expect it will be the bearings gone, essentially all that is inside is a vane pump that looks very similar to a compressor turbine from a turbocharger

Hi

I ordered a used one with low milage from a junkyard ( is that the correct word or should it be scrapyard?) and they will send it to me I hope it is ok. The cost with freight is total 70 Euro which I think is ok I managed to get a discount. A new repaired one will cost approx. 170 Euro.

"Junkyard" is more normally American usage than British (we'd normally say "scrapyard") but either is correct.

Hi

I have changed the servo pump and now the whining sound has gone. I took apart the "bad" one and the bearings seemed to be ok but there were a problem with one of the two thin metal pins that hold the stator case inside the pump. The hole in the end plate which supported one of them were oval and not round and the pin had a big play there and I guess this was the reason for the whining sound when the stator was not supported ok.:)
