1.2 or 1.8?

Featured Replies

I will order a Yeti for sure, but i cannot decide between the 2 petrol engines. I believe that the lower torque of the 1.2 engine is compensated from the lighter by 150 kgs car it carries. Does the 1.8 worth the extra 6000 euros? (plus 1500 per year- the differance of tax, insurance and fuel cost in my country).

So the question is for happy 1.2 owners or serious testers : Is this little engine powered enough in real life, not tests? Can i ride for 5 or 6 hours with this at 130 km/h whithout pushing the engine to its limits?

After 10 years riding SUVs (grand vitara and now x-trail), i deciced that I can live whithout 4wd. All i need is a decent clearance fom soil. And a powerful engine. Also, as I am struggling right now to sell the x-trail at 40% of his initial value, i want to buy cheaper this time. Cheaper cars devaluate less.

Neither actually exsist - so if your prepared to wait till April.

Personally, I'm off to the Volkswagen dealer to by one of those pig ugly Tiguan's that you can actually buy. And thanks to Skoda have forced VW UK to start heavily discounting making the difference not as big as it was 3 months ago.

My 1.2 manual should arrive just before Christmas - it's only the DSG 'box that won't be around until next year. In manual, 2wd guise you actually save a lot more than 150kg and I saw no reason why the 1.2 shouldn't be up to the job.

The 1.8 was never going to be an option for me due to running costs and I don't do enough miles for a diesel to be considered a benefit.

Back to timing, I think I'm right in saying that in E and S trim (UK) week 47 (next week) will see the first 1.2 Yetis through the factory - hopefully mine will be one of them!

The 1.8 is already available in the UK, some dealers have them as demos.

According to a review from the Czech site Auto.CZ the 1.2TSI feels like a non-turbo 1.8. They praise it's refinement, power from low revs and driveability.

At 130KMH in 6th, it is doing 3000RPM.

Even though on paper the 1.2 is not very quick, I think driveability is more important. With good peak torque from 1500RPM it should be nice. The 1.8 is surely more exciting, but CO2 is a lot higher and it uses a lot more petrol too (plus that big difference in list price)

I am interested in a petrol Yeti towards the end of next year. If I buy new it will probably have to be a 1.2, but if I can find a good price for a used 1.8 I might consider it!

I decided to go for the 1.2. Ambition trim with pano roof. Hope that it will powerful enough. Delivery end of January. Must choose now between white and red! Is the 1.2 manual available somewhere? (2 and half months to feel ..)

Why cant they compromise and stick the 1.4TSI in it??

Makes sense to me.. especially one of the 170ps (i think that's right) twin-charger ones!

But then I suppose that would totally over shadow the 1.8t and people would probably go for the 1.4tsi over the 1.8t.

I think one of the main reasons is that they are trying to keep the VW, Seat and Audi models apart from the Skoda ones so that they each have they're own model line up with different engines and specs available. They probably make more money that way!

I've mentioned this before. To me the 1.4 TSi with 122PS from the Octavia would be perfrect in the Yeti. A bit more poke than the 1.2 TSi but without the expense of the 1.8 Tsi. To me it would fill the gap perfectly between the two.

Is the 1.2 the most recent engine does anyone know?

And is it just the new Polo and Yeti that have got it?

I had a 1.8TSi Elegance Yeti go out yesterday, I took it to the petrol station and it's pretty powerful. It was brand new so I couldn't really drive it hard or anything but it certainly feels very powerful and full of torque. I'd like to drive one done a few thousand miles.

I believe it's already in the Golf Plus thingy in Europe and will make it's way to the Audi A3 soon too.

It is a newer engine than the 1.8.

As for no 1.4TSI, there is a bit of a shortage of those units at the moment, maybe one day it will make it's way to the Yeti.

Good (and fustrating) to know people are thinking the same as me (gap between 1.2 and 1.8) - I mentioned this to the Skoda people months ago. 1.4 tsi sounds perfect for the Yeti. What about another campaign?! Still waiting for a test drive in a 1.2 - seems they are getting sold before entering showrooms!:(

I just went ahead with the 1.2 without a test drive.

Some good reviews of the unit in Polo. Nice flat torque curve.

I'm sure it will deliver the performance of a 1.6 with the economy of a 1.8.

Hang on a minute...?

I had a quick spin in a 1.2 TSI manual gear box today. I don't think those of you who have ordered one will be disapointed.. It pulls nicely with OK torque from around 1500 rpm. You have to use the gears a bit if you want to go "fast", but cruising is OK even in higher gears. I only had a 10 minute run on roads around work, so I didn't get the chance to test it at highway speeds. RPM in 80 km/h in 6. was around 2000.

I think the 1.2 will be very nice combined with the 7 speed DSG box.

The little engine handled the weight of the Yeti like a champ. I would not even compare this engine with the old 1.6 normaly aspirated engines Skoda has used. It's miles ahead in both pulling power and sophistication.

Ouph... Thank you JonA. You must be the very first real people (not a journalist) who drove the little beast. I feel better now, because i ordered a 1.2 recently and then i had my doubts and seconds thoughts to cancel for a 1.8. I can sleep in peace now! lol Thank you again..

Yes, i think DSG is worth the wait. So i'm hoping my patience of 4 months for delivery will be rewarded.

I've downgraded the manual 1.2 TSI SE to an S spec, just to pay for the DSG box. No amount of extra toys will compensate for a sore left leg!!!

Their review is kind of mixed up - it talks about the 1.2 then talks about Haldex and hill descent ?

Does that mean that you've actually been able to order a 1.2 DSG?
