Diesel future

Featured Replies

Im about to go Diesel after being an evil Subaru Impreza driver for years. Im all set on a Fabia VRS and really love the car. Price wise the car is fine and the savings from my Impreza are silly obvious. I do have concerns about possible nasty Diesel price rises compared to Petrol. As i follow petrol all the time im out the loop. Any one have any inside scoop or speculations on where pricing is likely to go in the next few years. I expect up but how bad?

Cheers

It's all gonna go up!

around here the deisel and petrol prices have evened out, sometimes there is only 1p per litre between them... I wouldn't know about the future, but as babs says, its all gonna go up :(

Even if it sits 5ppl higher, you still fill up less as it gets you further.

You sound like you use your car a lot? If so the diesel is obviously going to be the better option.

Diesel and petrol are both on the up. Doesn't matter which one you run on. You'll notice the difference in your fuel bill after the Scoob-----Big Time!!!!!!

Hope you find a nice BLACK one.

difference has leveled out and will likely stay at a penny or two. Reason being, I believe, that a bit new refinery has come on stream that can max the amount or diesel produced.

The price of fuel will go up 2-3p /l at the end of the year when the VAT changes, and I'm sure it will continue to rise.

As mentioned the difference in price of petrol to diesel has come closer to 1-2p/l now, if you can remember last year and previous year it was up to 12-14p per liter difference.

You will definitely save money on fuel and tax by swapping the Scooby for a Furby vRS. If you miss the power then there are ways of improving the standard car's power (by remapping).

Cheers all. Comments all appreciated. As long as there is no huge diesel rises compared to Petrol i'm cool with the rises as its going to happen.

Yeah i have to do it, due to miles i do weekly. I really do like the VRS and i was very impressed with the car standard. But i do fully intend to mod it. Im a Scooby owner it's in the blood. I also really really appreciate the mature nature of this forum. If you went on a Scoob forum with a vrs you would be flamed. This is another reason to get rid. They are too cheap now and a good lot of planks own them, its ruined the rep of them in recent years.

If you dare to say another car is good for whatever reason its anti Subaru. They are great cars but all through the range they are bad for mpg and with fuel going up this is a huge turn off for them for most people. Hence the new turbo'd model is doing so bad. Along with the new looks not helping things.

Now to catch a nice Fabia and sell my Scoob to an eager 20 something who will no doubt slap on some clear lights and stickers then promptly smash it :rotz:

Subaru are now making a Diseasel Impreza, if you want your streetcred back on Scoobynet and still be economical. However these are brand new and will be way too much for your budget.

I hope you will enjoy your new Fabia.

With a few choice mods, a dirty diesel can still be pretty rapid mate ;)

You might miss 4WD aka a thing called GRIP!

I think you're OK for the short term with Diesel. But be aware that there is a serious diesel shortage, and I'd expect prices for Diesel to rocket in the next 10-15 years.

The telltale is that all the major large truck manufacturers are beginning to develop GDI engines, as a safeguard for if and when Diesel becomes economically unfeasable.

The Impreza hatch is ridiculous money IMHO but anyway you will enjoy your VRS and get well over 50mpg if you drive sensibly. I thought this thread was about the engine's long term viability and I would say not good. The PD is a great engine but now there is too much complication with common rail, DPFs and soon urea additives to meet emissions leg. I love my Fabia but won't buy another Diesel even though love Diesel torque for day to day.

Yeah, if you look at it, diesel efficiency has actually dropped with this current generation of engines, but petrol keeps getting more efficient!

What do you mean that diesel efficiency has drooped with the with the current engines? Do you mean to say that common rail is less efficient?

Yes - from the manufacturers figures, the current CR engines are less efficient than the PD lumps they replaced.

Yes - from the manufacturers figures, the current CR engines are less efficient than the PD lumps they replaced.

How so? The 1.6CR is more efficient than the 1.9PD it is replacing in the Octavia range. It has virtually identical power and torque figures, but is more economical and puts out less CO2.
