Chip Tuning-any good?

Featured Replies

Just had a look at a firm in Germany who do Chip Tuning boxes.

According to them they can increase the CR170 Td to 222BHP.

Looks simple to install etc but are they any good.

Quite cheap as well about £150.

Anyone got one fitted?

heard alot about chip boxes causing issues in the past. also absolutely no way you can get 222bhp from the cr170 without additional bolt on mods.

go with a remap instead safer(providing you get a reputable tuner to do it) and you will reap more benefits.

your looking at 200-210bhp .

IMO stay away from chip tuners. remapping is the future.

the chip box might be cheap but a repair bill will not be!!

Thanks for that.

What about Bluefin or Shark.

It is a company car and i don't want to have anything noticable for insurance/warranty issues.

Need something cheap but easy to install/re-install.

Also something to increase fuel consumption as well as a bit of power increase.

I do 30,000 miles and have to buy my own fuel.

Cheers

if your after something to install and be able to take it back off as you please. then bluefin or shark performance are your best options. (do tell the insurnce though)

i think the group buy is still on till monday for the shark performances STS box.

iirc bahnstormer has the bluefin, dont know much about it on the tdi but it wasnt up to the job on the TFSI.

fuel economy goes up on the diesels a fair bit iirc though, which is a bonus

I would go off and read your company handbook or equivalent, at best you would be technically uninsured, OTOH it could cost you your job. A majority of companies have disciplinary procedures in place for tampering with company cars. You could be looking at gross misconduct depending on your company's rules.

Besides, some forms of tuning can still be detected with the right diagnostic equipment.

I don't know if Superchips ever got round to spoofing the flash counter with the Bluefin on the TDI ECUs for instance.

ALL forms of ECU changes can be detected regardless of flash counters etc.

i think i will leave it as base car.

Just looking for better economy and not for power upgrade!

There's plenty of poke in the original engine config anyway.

Thanks anyway

You will get the economy and extra power. Most of the tuners will offer a free trial, why dont you try it and see for yourself and then decide.
