Engine life span?

Featured Replies

Hi,

at the minute I currently have an AUB engine, on which the the piston rings are going (its just shy of 100,000 miles).

I was wondering how many miles it takes for these to go normally on this engine, or is it more to do with how it's driven and cared for?

As I have seen one with ~60,000 miles for sale and was wondering if that would be having the same issues, or is it unrelated to mileage?

Hope that makes sense,

Joe.

I guess the answer is no- more important is the care with which it is maintained and driven, thing like warm up - short trips -lots of cold starts(bore-washing) and "extended":finger: maintainance cycles 60 thou should not be a problem for modern engines (even petrol ones;))

:iagree:

A mate of mine has an Audi S2 Coupe with over 200,000 miles on the clock.

It seems to me from looking at the posts on here that AUB engines with low mileage suffer more from piston ring wear than those with higher/average mileages.

I seem to remember seeing mention of a few with sub 30k on the clock requiring rings where others with a far higher mileage have been fine. This is probably down to what the Cheshire Car has mentioned with lots of cold starts and short trips leading to plenty of bore washing leading to premature wear.

I had an 02 AUB engined Fabia which had about 60k on the clock when I sold it and it didn't really use any significant quantities of oil so long as I kept the breather clean.

You are pretty much correct, the piston rings tend to gum up with carbon due to breather problems if they never get up to temp, ie lots of short journeys, so in general low mileage engines are more likely to be knackered:thumbup:

The aub/aua engine is reasonably cheap and easy to re build however;)

Can someone just clarify what an AUB engine is? TDi? Petrol?

Cheers

Known for being crap as the piston rings are known to fail and have high oil consumption, and a 1.4 16v as said. Later changed to a BBZ engine, which is fitted to later Fabias.

My Fabia 1.4 16v (04 PLATE)(AUB) PISTON RINGS FAILED AROUND 43K MILES, SKODA DEALER PRESENTED ME WITH A BILL FOR ABOUT £1200 TOLD THEM I WASNT GOING TO PAY THAT,I GOT IN TOUCH WITH SKODA UK THEY CONTRIBUTED, DEALER CONTRIBUTED SO I ENDED UP PAYING JUST OVER£300 FOR THE WORK, WHICH INCLUDED PISTON RINGS, HEAD GASKET, NEW EGR VALVE AND OTHER BITS..ALL IN ALL A GOOD DEAL ME THINK..

The AUB has a know issue relating to EGR / breather problems leading to piston ring failure if not fixed.

Just to add, I might be wrong but isn't the AUB specifically the 100bhp?

I had one of these.. I bought it with 50k on it and the garage told me "The rings have been done recently mate" And they did indeed hold up while I owned it, I drove it upto 71k before selling it.. not even a drop of oil lost!

Mine had this I think. Soon after buying it the CEL came on, and it was the EGR valve. Stayed like this for a while as I never got round to fixing it, and I get the impression it was like it for a while before I got it, so guess the carbon build up gets into the engines as well and forces the rings apart?

My old car (Fabia 1.4 16v MY2000) I bought last year (May 08) had 76k on it, piston rings started to go at 88k (failed MOT on emissions (June 09)) and I was looking at a repair bill of at least £485 (providing no other damage was caused). Car scraped through the MOT with a new catalytic converter on the front for £300.

My Ex girlfriend had a 2001 Lupo (auto) 1.4 petrol, and that engine used Oil quite a lot.

We bought it 2nd hand @ 3years old with a FSH with 20,000 miles on the clock, and I did all the oil changes (and flush) with Castrol magnatec 10w-40.

For some reason it just used to use a litre of oil every 1000miles, maybe less miles. Didn't matter how we drove it, it used to use oil like no business.

Apparently (looking on the forums) the VW 1.4 engine does this.
