drum and hub nuts

Featured Replies

evening, to cure some brake grinding i went to change the back brake shoes on saturday. car in the air, wheel off, retaining screw out then the drum wouldn't move. i tried re attaching the wheel and pulling it that way but nothing. i figure (although vag cat diagrams suggest otherwise) the drum is held in place by the hub nut. please point out i'm wrong and too feeble to shift the drum if this is the case. otherwise what size is the rear hub nut and where does one get the part (preferably avoiding dealers as my local ones are useless to the point of going to VW dealerships instead)? or failing that can the rear hub nuts be re-used? i understand this is not clever with the driven wheels. my last question is if the drum is held on by the hub nut why is there a retaining nut or is this a hangover from the rear discs? i noticed the caliper mounting holes are sitting rusty and unused..... all pointers appreciated. regards

This may be a stupid question, but is the handbrake off, and have you backed off the HB adjustors?

tbh thats what i was thinking common mistake is to leave the handbrake on!

hand brake off - but not adjusters? i read a vague description of sticking a screw driver through a wheel nut hole and prying something. where abouts is the adjuster? thanks for pointing this out - last time i changed shoes it was on a volvo 340 and all the bits more or less fell off. cheers
