Daft windscreen wipers question

Featured Replies

Call me a muppet for asking, I probably would! :-) but...are the windscreen wipers supposed to meet to leave no middle portion of the screen wiped on a vRS?The reason I ask is mine don't and leave a sort of shark fin shape at the bottom thats not covered. Thought this was unusual.

No, thats normal for most cars with wipers like these I think. Certainly is on the Fabia anyway. May find over time they might start hitting the A pillar though, so watch out for that.

If you have ones that come in from the sides then you don''t get that issue.

Mine has started knocking on the A-Pillar, clicking noise everytime it wipes. Why has it started doing this and what can be done to stop it?

Something to do with readjusting the spline I think, but the search is problematic so I can't help more than that.

However, I found changing my wiper blades stopped mine hitting the A-pillar, kinda makes sense if they were worn out and bouncing over the screen I guess.

The wiper arm has to be taken off and moved, mark with sticky tape the position of the wiper blade on the screen, remove the plastic cap and underneath you will find a 13mm nut, remove the nut and if your lucky sometimes you can 'jiggle' the arm up and down off the shaft, if your not lucky you need a small joint splitter to pull the arm off the splined shaft, you can then smear a small amount of copper slip ( or grease ) onto the spline to ease removal in the future, and you just need to refit the arm one notch lower back on the spline so the wiper arm is lower than it was before, replace nut and cap and test. jobs a good en - cheers - Stuart.

Excellent, thanks guys.

If they didn't leave a small unswept portion at the bottom, then they'd snag!

:+1: on replacing the wipers if they start to catch on the A pillar, BTW...

I think i've solved the problem now. I thought my wipers were too short and I think they're both passenger side wipers which are 18 inches. The drivers side wiper is meant to be 21 inches. This would explain the large unwiped portion.

Ah!

Especially as the passenger one is curved!

Ha Ha, yeah I was being a bit dumb! It only clicked when I went on to the Halfords website and saw they were different lengths!

The standard sizes for the Farbia are 21" (drivers) and 19" (passenger). Retro-fit Aero ones are the way to go. :D

you can just about get a 22" blade on, bit it'll catch the A-pillar more

I managed to get a 22'' (drivers) and 20'' (passenger) wipers on without the wiper hitting the A-pillar

Ive recently had the problem of wipers hitting the pillar, as mentioned above remove the plastic cap covering the 13mm nut and remove the nut also. the wiper arms should be flat on the windscreen also BUT you dont need any tools to get the arm off. at worst a touch of WD40 over the spline will help. With the nut removed and wipers flat on the screen, carefully push the joint of the wiper arm forward,(the pivot point for where you can raise the arm off the windscreen) toward the screen. the arm should free off the splines and then you can adjust the arm to suit.

Hope this helps :)

I wouldn't say you don't need any tools, depends on how rusted up they are. Few people on here will testify to that. Doesn't hurt to pop the cap off and try though :)
