Detachable Towbar - how neat are they?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

We are picking up a new Roomster this week and I would like to get some feedback on the best / neatest type of towbar to specify.

The car is not a Scout so we are dealing with a "normal" back bumper here.

I have seen detachable bars from Brink, Bosal and Westfalia, the Westfalia being I believe the OEM fitment. All are just about the same price but as some of the designs differ I would like to see what people think with regards to ease-of-use etc.

Skoda offer two solutions for covering up the vacant hole in the bumper when towbar is not in use - a cover and a cover with frame. Which is needed ? how does the cover secure in place ? Does anybody have any photos of a detachable bar in place please ?

Where does the electrical socket sit when bar is not in use - does it hide behind the bumper skin under the cover or is it below the bumper level and accessed from underneath ?

Has anyone fitted the normal 7-pin electrics without using one of the more expensive "plug and play" type connectors ( one of the bars advertised comes bundled with basic electrics and I wonder if there is anything to watch out for with all the modern electrickery involved in a new car)

Sorry for so many questions, I have searched the Roomster forum and got a lot of info but still need more.

Thanks in advance.

My detachable towbar was fitted by my dealer when I bought the car. It's very neat and fits in a socket behind the bumper. The electric socket is also in there. The cover comes with a frame that is bonded inside the bumper and the cover clips into that frame when it is scarcely noticeable. When not in use the towbar is stored in a recess under the spare wheel together with the jack and other tools.

Our caravan has a 13 pin plug, but I also have an adaptor from a company called Towequipe so I can tow other trailers. One side plugs into the 13 pin socket while the 7 pin plugs into the other side and it works fine.

[Thanks Calomax,

Will get the frame and cover ordered when the car is picked up.

When I ordered the towbar my dealer said people tended not to bother with the cover because the hole is low down and not very obvious. But once the job was done my wife didn't like the hole so I ordered the cover and frame. I thing they were only about £12 or £13 but then I had to pay about £40 for painting and fitting.
