Should be OK as the spec listed is SAE 5W/40 to 20W/50 on std service intervals.

I use Mobil 1 SHC 0W/40 due to my car being modified and generaly only doing low mileage and short distances.

i wouldnt mate , it should b a fully synthetic in these , i work in a motor factors which deals with valvoline , shell and comma and they all list a fully synthetic 5w30 ,i use valvoline 5w30 xl-3 which is just for vag motors,

15w 40 is for older motors like b4 1998 or there abouts . its all 2 do with the cleaning agents they put in the oil . + 15w40 is a mineral oil not a synthetic

hope that helps a bit ( just hope i remembred my training) lol

Thats typical of the crap advice given out by motor factors.

It is not a requirement to run these engines on "fully synthetic" (SHC) engine oil when using std service intervals...... and the viscosity index of an oil does not refer to cleaning agents in the oil.

The OP has already stated the oil meets the required vag spec.........so its the correct oil for the car.

1.8T engine and on fixed or variable servicing?

Went to skoda themselves and they stated the factory fill for fixed servicing is quantum synta which is a semi-synth 10w40. You can go synta platinum if you like (5w40) but apparently it is not required for normal use. Can't see 15w40 causing any problems.

The Quantum Synta stuff is pretty cheap from VW (used to use it in my VR6) and seems to do the job well enough.

It's worse than that; the viscosity index of an oil is not, and never has been, in any way, shape, or form a specification as was claimed. SAE SM (I think), VAG 506.00 etc are specifications.

cheers for the info guys. Its serviced every 10k so do we think this is ok then as when i look up the spec 501.01 it meets vw spec for older engines but i cant find any reason to not use it, so do we think its ok?

It's your engine and wallet, but if the oil meets the spec extant when the engine was built, I can't see any reason it would cause damage.

Still, a fully synthetic 5w-40 oil is very cheap (like 30euro for 5 liters) and you change it (avg) twice a year. Surely those 60euro are worth your peace of mind...I mean, i definitely spend more than that on gas PER MONTH :)

As far as I know the standard for the vrs is 502.0/505.0, is 501.0 also ok?
