Windows update problem?

Featured Replies

I've found one of my Server 2003 machines has a little issue with updates. IE runs but when I go to windows update I get as far as picking "custom" or "express" then

[Error number: 0x80072EFD] The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

None of the instructions I've found so far have helped.

Any ideas before I end up wiping it and rebuliding?

All of our other machines have their updates done by a WSUS server but we can't do the same for this one.

I think where you have gone wrong there is using windows update in the first place! I have always found doing updates that it has caused more problems than it has fixed!

Don't fix what isn't broken I say!

Sorry I couldn't be of any more constructive help!

Phil

I remember coming across it in a previous job, but I never actually solved it. I'm sure you've Googled all the possible solutions, which all tell you that it's a communication issue between the server and MS update. I think I ended up rebuilding the box in the end.

Yep , one of the pages I read had a direct link to a particular file on the windows update site , and if you could download that then it proved that internet connectivity was ok and the issue must be somewhere on the server.

Annoyingly that's exactly what happened - I'd have preferred it not to have worked as then it would be an issue with our firewall which I could have batted off to someone else to fix , but no such luck.

All instances I've had of this have been admin rights issues.

Interesting.

This is a server in a DMZ that isn't part of our domain.

I'll check permissions.

Thanks
