Does anyone get DMF judder with the cold weather?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Every now and then i keep getting a noticable amount of DMF judder now the weather has turned a bit colder. The DMF was replaced around 31k since.

Particulaly when setting off on hills i get some judder through the car, once the cars warm it gives over.

The DMF doesn't judder at all when driving around town.

Has anyone else noticed this at all?

Sure it isn't the clutch rather than the flywheel?

My clutch judders a little on cold damp mornings but is fine once things warm up and dry out.

My DMF was replaced at 70,000 miles but the juddering has always happened on those colder mornings.

Mine is juddering a lot for the first 4 or 5 stop starts in the morning and it seems worse now its colder, I would get it replaced under warranty but by the time I get to the dealer it is ok and when he test drove the car he said it is within tolerance still but then next morning its doing it again.

It seems worse on wet mornings.

Interesting that people are experiencing this on the 2.0CR TDI too, its kind of put my mind at ease a little knowing im not the only person experiencing this.

No judder here with standard clutch and manual box plus Superchipped TDI

I've only experienced it this year with the cold weather tbh, doesn't give any problems or indications there is a problem once its warmed up.

My PD170 is similar. It's incredibly hard to pull away smoothly from standing the first couple of times when it's cold. After that, it's fine.

Are we sure it's a clutch fault we're dealing with here and not poor engine management? It's interesting that Jules has no probs and his is re-mapped. Mine was very juddery/hesitant at low speeds until I had a re-map, now all the probelms with pulling away smoothly from rest have gone. Just a thought...

On a cold engine my 1.9 PD is very similar too. Even being gentle with the clutch it still threatens to stall the first time I pull away. 200m down the road at the next junction it's pretty much perfect though, so if it's a warming up issue it sorts itself very quickly on my car...

My old 1.9 PDI had this issue first think in the morning until warm, it was under warrantee so I dropped it off at the dealer overnight so they could try it first thing in the morning.

They found the problem and replaced both the clutch and flywheel and all was OK then.

If it's within warrantee get it down to the dealers.

Me too - judder when changing gear (esp. 3rd to 4th) and wobbly idle (like an out of balance flywheel) when the clutch is depressed in the cold. Its fine when it warms up...

Same issue on an 08 Golf 2.0 TDI. Although my wobbly idle never goes away.

Its going into the dealers next week for the 4th time for them to tell me the diagnostics say its ok. ho Hum.

Defintely worse when its damp outside though.

Used to get this in my Passat PD 100ps. I attributed it to a rusting metal disc thingy, in damp weather (think rusty brake discs) causing unpredictable extra friction.:S

I mitigated the problem by lightly slipping the clutch first engagement to clean it up. Sold the car at 140k on the original, non slipping!, clutch.B)
