New door membrain question?

Featured Replies

Doors are leaking and its doing my head in as I cant seal it with new plastic sheeting (maybe its the cold weather) but the water is still getting past the plastic sheeting even when i stick it to the door using silicone which has now made a bit of a mess.

What is the best way to get rid of all this silicone as I was thinking of letting the dealer fit new membraines as the car is steaming up quite bad and starting to smell musky.

Has anyone managed to re-seal the door using plastic sheeting cut to the size of the door.

Got to a DIY store such as B&Q and look for a compound for removing silicon from baths/showers. Usually made by Down Corning IIRC.

Most people just use a sharp knife blade in a scraper and cut it right back if I'm honest.

I wonder, is this the rear passenger doors, and if so, are the sealing rubbers wet?

I didnt want to do the knife thing as knowing me i would damage the paint, a skoda dealer has quoted me £87 to do the back door and front passenger door as these are the 2 playing up.

If i just got the door membrains is it easy enough or quite a task to do it yourself, its just getting all this silicon off now (wich i never used it now)

Its a very easy job to do mate, seems expensive for the dealer to do it.

i see allot of people including dealers just running a bead of silicone around the ancillery carrier without taking it off and it dont seal ****!!!

You must loosen all the bolts around the carrier de grease it and get the silicone underneith the carrier and bolt it down wet so it dries and creates a seal.

I did it in a day to all my doors on my Cupra R and its never leaked since and my carpets are bone dry.

Also clean the seals on bottom of doors and check the drain holes are clear too

It should be quite straight forward, you can either buy new membranes or make some from some plastic sheet. Some sticky sealer on a roll would be ideal as you can manipulate it and it doesn't set. It's quite time consuming, hence the price quoted, but not technically involved. Post #5 above is applicable to the Fabia and MK II Octavia, as the MK I Octavia does not have ancilliary carriers. Removing the old silicone sealer will be a pain, a plastic scraper that doesn't scratch the paint will help.
